but WNBA players spend their summers playing professionally in Europe
They aren't making much more, if any. They are just double-dipping because the seasons are different.
Also, in other parts of the world, the teams and leagues (not just women's) are subsidized by the government or billionaires that have these teams for fun. They don't, and aren't expected to, make a profit.
The Saudi Arabian men's soccer team that recently offered a player $1 billion to play for them averages 9,000 fans per match.
It's not a free-market comparison.

Women's Professional Sports in Europe
Why are separating sports along the lines of social constructs?
Just have one sport. If people who identify as women are good enough, they can rake in the big bucks.

I think it’s some sort of dick-measuring contest between Russian oligarchs.

Oh, I didn't need to ask which is why I didn't.
But here's an idea... if YOU care so damn much, why not do a bit of research on the topic yourself?
Or are you just virtue signaling for snorts and giggles?
Hank is normally an annoyance when it comes to his "contrarian at all costs" posting style, but this thread isn't under that umbrella for once.
I welcome the distraction from the Ron vs. Don shite flinging fest this board has become, even if it's a slightly off-kilter topic.

You are being an a-hole. He started a thread because he is interested in it. Other folks who are interested will join in. If you are not interested just stay out of the thread like I stay out of the ones about New Orleans politics.

quote:The WNBA has a salary cap system in place to maintain competitive balance among teams and control player costs. As of 2021, the WNBA salary cap was around $1 million, though they do allow for some salary cap exceptions, and the maximum salary for a veteran player was around $215,000.
But that is just speculation, which is why I was interested in other opinions.
By comparison, there's no unified salary cap for European women's basketball leagues. Some are more open market, allowing teams to spend more on player salaries, while others have stricter budget limitations.
Salary levels vary significantly. But top-tier European leagues, like the Russian Premier League (PBL) or the Turkish Women's Basketball League (TKBL), offer competitive salaries to attract both domestic and international talent.
IOW, it seems Russians enjoy seeing an American freakshow like Griner on display, and are willing to pay higher gate for the privilege.
