Luck plays a huge part in one's success and lack thereof. It is just uncomfortable to admit that fact. It feels better to believe success is solely due to hard work and diligence.

The vast majority of people are born with at least some ability that allows them to have marketable skills.

Only around 2-3% of workers are unskilled/min wage, and many of those are teens who have skills but aren't trained yet.

Just for clarity, are you saying that your inherent traits like intelligence, charisma, etc. are the products of "luck."

If Capitalism was working better for more people you wouldn't see the popularity of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes, and the DSA.

Maybe you need to look at the flaws in capitalism. If it worked better you wouldn't see socialism in the US becoming more popular. Don't blame the failures of capitalism on socialism.

WTF?

What's the membership of the DSA? It probably parallels literature majors.

The greatest danger from capitalism is its need for population growth. Currently, 80% of the earth's societies are practicing capitalism. This is good in the short term because it's improving the living standards of people.

It's also good in the long term

In the long term, however, the growth we're seeing is not sustainable.

Birth rates have been declining for decades

I don't need to look at an uneducated voting populace. I have a plethora of data on global standards of living.

Sure it has flaws. It's just the least flawed.

Most "socialists" cannot even define the term much less give an accurate historical account of its horrors.

I don't. I don't even compare the two considering how superior capitalism is to socialism. The failures of capitalism are exponentially outweighed by its benefits.

Let's see. Raised upper middle class, on parents payroll through college and most of your success is through networking, mainly old family friends?

And totally unaware that most people don't have those benefits. "Luck" is usually the result of hard work and preparation, as well as good choices.

That's not happening in Africa, the Middle East, China, India and South America. All are strongly capitalist societies and are also experiencing rapid population growth.

You might want to review what capitalism is... Most of the countries/continents you mentioned are closer to socialist than capitalist.

What do you think about the inevitable fact of automation/robotification of the workforce? It seems to me that it most definitely will lead to greater inequality.

I think this is overblown... There is always a growth to human knowledge and desire that leads to new market opportunities. If it's all about robots, somebody always makes a better robot. And people will continue to do the things that computers suck at. Computers will continue to suck at certain things for a long, long time.

You aren't wrong but the issue is going to be no skill/low skill employment. Right now, that is a significant portion of our economy and automation will render a lot of these jobs obsolete.

I see that we have "worked" with the same people.. If I knew that I could get away with slamming my keyboard against their skull I would...but that would be a waste of a good keyboard...

Simple. They are incompetent, lazy chronic underachievers and need someone to take care of their basic needs because they can't support themselves.
