I drive fast and have been pulled over for it a couple of times. When the cop comes to the window I had him my CCL along with my license. My philosophy is that no surprises is the best approach and neither time did the cop even tell me to get out of my vehicle.

With my CHL I’m pretty sure if they run my license it would pop up.

For 30 years I started work at 2 am, leave my house at 1:30. Guess who 90% of the people on the road are at that time. Roughly twice a year I'd get pulled over. Pull the car over, turn on the inside light roll down my window and put my hands on the door. Where, you going, work. Where do you work, XXX. Slow down next time. Never was speeding, but they felt safe and I didn't get shot.

Although you make great points on the flip side what if they enter gun info in their database about the stop? If they note you had a gun (even legally) the next cop stops you and approaches things differently.

I hear you loud and clear brother. Fact is there’s no way of knowing what the best approach because the scenario you mentioned may be something that can happen but I’m gonna always try my best to go with the path of least resistance. I’m not gonna let 10 over the speed limit or a taillight being out keep me from getting home to my family any longer than it has to.

Not in Missouri but its a courtesy, I have offered, when stopped for traffic offences.

Windows down. Credentials ready. On my way in less than 10 mins. Usually with a warning.

Best practice is to keep your hands viewable and stationary until told to use them. Last thing, I want is a trigger happy, young rookie cop pulling his service weapon on me because I reached for my wallet or registaitration in anticipation of his request. I do not offer any information not specifically asked for, I just comply and make the situation a non-event. Take my ticket, or warning, be courteous, and do not escalate. I know I am not winning any argument on a roadside.

If it’s night time or I have tinted windows, I’ll hang my hands out the car just to put them at ease. I let them know if my pistol is in the truck. Only once has a cop made me feel it was unnecessary to tell him as he brushed it off and told me it was my right. I do it, put them at ease AB’s to make the stop go more smooth.

“For officer safety.” It’s amazing how much the constitution gets shite on based on those words.

I would believe it's more not be shot by the trigger happy cop who is surprised by a weapon.

If you pull a weapon after not telling an officer about it, this would be a reasonable reaction.

I am talking about if you have a gun in your glovebox. Open it to get your registration and insurance. Cops see's it and then shoots you for having a gun. You never touched it, but he claims that you were "reaching for it." I have had guns pulled on me for having a knife on the back floorboard of my car. I was a Chef at the time.

I've seen too many videos of police officers getting shot during traffic stops to believe they shouldn't ask this question.

Do the shooters normally answer truthfully?

Whether a person has a gun or not should not be the business of anybody, including a cop, unless a crime has been committed

There's 'in theory" and there's the reality of it.

In theory, it's none of the cop's business.

In reality, if he's at your door looking in, you go to get your registration and proof of insurance and he sees a pistol, he's going to freak out. Being a cop is dangerous, and they're twitchy at times.
I knew a girl way back in high school (80's), she got pulled over. Cop asked her for something and she reached down the side of her seat by the door. She said that's where her purse was. He put a gun in her face and yelled for her to show hands, and get out of the vehicle.

Most cops probably don't actively want to be a dick *benefit of the doubt*, but NO cop wants to get shot during a traffic stop.

It depends on the state. It is called duty to notify.

With that said, I've always told a cop I've had a gun on me or in my vehicle when I've been stopped.

No, and that's exactly why even when there's not a duty to notify it is a good idea to tell the cop you have a firearm on you or in your vehicle. They hear that and know you're a law abiding citizen.

I shared this story on SECRant not too long ago, but I was pulled over a few years back and the officer wanted to search my vehicle. I let him know where my gun was and the readiness condition it was in, and he pretty much knew there was no contraband in my vehicle after that.

He searched my vehicle, admitted he just needed to get a vehicle search in for the month, and instead of getting a speeding ticket, non-moving violation, or written warning, I got nothing when I was driving 11 MPH over the limit.

This is one of those things where you might not have a legal obligation to say it, but it helps you as the law-abiding citizen. If you want to be super Libertarian and not cooperate because you have no legal obligation to do so, then fine. But also enjoy your ticket for some bullshite the officer csn write you up for because you decided to argue constitutional law on the side of the highway.

Thank God it wasn’t something unconstitutional.

I was on a business trip in TX awhile back and got pulled over. The first thing he asked was if I had a gun in the car.

First time that ever happened. Wasn't sure the legality of that really. I just said no cause it was true. Wasn't sure what would have happened if I did and said yes.

I just rolled a stop sign at a pretty awkward intersection, so not sure why I was asked unless it's a regular thing.

Its never good for any government to have gun info on citizens.

This is my concern too.
