Why haven't they come back to work? In states that ended unemployment in June

My state was one of the ones that ended the "emergency unemployment" aka UBI back in June. Here it is two months later and every business is still hiring and can't get enough people to work.
The majority of the free money ran out two months ago. Almost three months ago actually. Why aren't they coming back?
This isn't a troll question, I'm genuinely curious on the board's take.

If you look at wage growth over the last 40 years vs cost of living it’s pretty obvious people aren’t paid enough

Not having to pay rent surely doesn't help.

Eviction moratorium still on? People still getting federal deposits for child care credits and other such things?
If so, people will be lazy as well as able to live off less than you would think because housing usually takes up such a big chunk of your budget.

If you look, a lot of minimum-wage workers are being paid too much.

Inflation will make that much worse.

no, it hasn't. Eviction moratorium and they're giving people a shitload of food stamps right now. People still don't have to go back to work.

They still have money stacked up from the payments and many still holding out hope for more. Give it another couple of months.

They are still getting state money & free rent.
They just can't afford to go to Tahiti anymore, they can still take in country vacations.

I’m starting to think a lot of these companies aren’t actually hiring.

A lot of them were able to save that money because they were not only getting the extra unemployment but they also got a ton of extra welfare money disguised as tax credits. Further, they didn't have to pay their rent (and still aren't) for over a f*cking year.

along with laziness, the eviction moratorium keeps people from having to work.
I have no clue what happens when the moratorium is lifted and people owe for 2 years. It will take years for all of the evictions to work through the court system.

You kind of have a point. It can definitely work to cover up ineptness in the business. Woe is me kind of thing.

This won't change until the eviction moratorium ends.

Ton of loopholes.
Got kids? $300 per month per kid.
Get unemployment still.. maybe not the excess, but still getting it.
Get all the EBT stuff because your status of unemployment and Biden is raising that.
No evictions.
Still get way reduced internet and phone bills...
So.. That equals to living at home with mom and have free food for the month and 2 sources of income and little bills.

Businesses can run a skeleton crew and charge higher prices because of “covid production deficits”, making their margins greater, all while having a built in excuse for dogshit service

My wife’s company needs 50 today. Will get paid $15.00/hr. and be hired today. Has ads everywhere.
There is large group of people willing to live off of other peoples money.

Skipping their rent payments. Getting good stamps.

I think part of it deals with sociology. Back when I was young, a man's total self worth was tied to his job. If he was laid off his wife gave him holy hell if he didn't find a job quick. If he failed he turned to drink or suicide.
Now, women have taken over. They don't require a man. They are independent. So guys just stay home and play video games and sign up for govt subsidies.
I read a fascinating psychological study in the 1960s.
The examiner asked men and women the same question:
Q: So, Mary, tell me 'who are you?'
A: Well, I like to read and keep in touch with friends. Sometimes I travel back to my old hometown to see my relatives. I like do to some gardening if the weather is nice.
Q: So, John, tell me 'who are you?'
A: I'm an electrician with Acme builders.'
It would be interesting to see how that study went today.
