It may be inevitable.
The entire foundation of western civilization is the primacy of the individual. This is why western nations are founded as republics and not democracies. However, eventually collectivism grows simply because it is easier to make social change in groups than by individuals and overtime that collective mindset becomes the majority of a population. Collectivism will fail rather quickly as it always does and then the cycle will repeat.

The 20th century was the American centrury. Started with the Spanish War ended with our tech boom.
Sadly the 21st century will be China's. We already gave it to them to save a few dollars on household goods.
