"Why early voting results could spell trouble for Louisiana constitutional amendments"

Democratic voters turned out in proportionally large numbers during the early voting period — and that could pose problems for the five constitutional amendments on Saturday’s ballot.
Political analysts believe that the five amendments – four of which Gov. Jeff Landry strongly backs – may fall prey to a backlash caused by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling and moves by Landry and other Republicans to remove Black Democrats from political office.
“There is one very obvious target for the energized Democratic voter base: the amendments,” said John Couvillon, a pollster and demographer in Baton Rouge who closely tracks early voting data. “If you’re a Democrat, voting “no” is a perfect way to express your anger.”

What are the amendments. I usually vote no anyway.

From the link I posted...

The five amendments would give the Legislature power to remove civil service protections for state employees, create a school system in the city of St. George in East Baton Rouge Parish, give teachers a pay raise by dissolving three education trust funds, allow parishes to eliminate the property tax on business inventory and raise the retirement age for judges from 70 to 75.

#2 authorizes a school district for St George, LA, splitting it off from EBR Parish schools.
#4 phases out the inventory tax.
#5 raises the judicial retirement age.
I’m voting yes on 2 and 4, probably no on the rest.
The reason for the no on 5 is that it seems worded to keep a few specific shitty 19th JDC judges on the bench for another term instead of making them ineligible for reelection.

Regardless of Landry’s “backing” most of those amendments seem to deal more with “pet issues” than anything really typically Republican vs Democrat.
Seems much ado about nothing, especially when it seems like Democrat voters are usually default Yes on such things anyway.

Well of course they're going to vote against StG schools. If EBRPSS has to be a shithole, everyone's kids should have to suffer (except for Chaz and Buffy, whose kids are in gifted and talented).

Louisiana is already so far behind other southern states. Repealing the inventory tax gives us a chance to at least compete.

The Advocate and Tyler Bridges hopes it spells trouble for Landry.
Here are the amendments:
Here are the amendments:

Amendment Number Description
1 Changes to the mandatory retirement age for judges, raising it from 70 to 75 years.
2 Modifications to the civil service system, impacting how state employees are managed.
3 Options for local governments to eliminate, phase out, or reduce business inventory taxes.
4 Utilization of approximately $2 billion from trust funds to pay down teacher retirement debt and increase teacher salaries.
5 Creation of a new school district in East Baton Rouge Parish to enhance educational governance.

Actually all except raising the judge’s age for retirement would benefit LA.

Voters overwhelmingly shot down all of Landry’s amendments last year.

I voted yes on 1-4 and no on 5.

allow parishes to eliminate the property tax on business inventory
The whole LA inventory tax system needs to be nuked. It's just a completely unnecessary bureaucratic circle jerk. Any tax you pay to a municipality just gets credited on your LA income tax return so you effectively pay nothing. Other than the fact that it is nonrefundable for corps, it is just a way to that the state indirectly fund local governments. The businesses are just middle men and have to fill out the paperwork. Why not just have the state directly subsidize local jurisdictions instead of putting businesses in the middle of a bunch of red tape?
And Local governments will absolutely not get rid of inventory taxes even if given the option because 1) all business owners know they will just get it back so they care little about it 2) and it is basically free funding from the state and the municipality gets to basically write their own check.

The groups that fill out all of the ballots for the Democrats on the voter rolls started their work early this election season.

This passes for journalism in 2026. Not a hint of dishonesty.

Translation: Landry has pissed off lots of black people and New Orleanians with his recent shenanigans.

You can have all the election integrity protections in the world but if the polling places aren’t being monitored it does no good. This is where our system is vulnerable and really only in certain voting precincts.

Let me guess, the only votes that are fraudulent are the ones that don’t align with your views?

Where did I allege fraud? I simply made the point that independent election monitors are critically important in certain voting precincts.

The abolition of inventory tax would be a great thing for my business.
