Lack of funding
Most people are either left or right, not middle

Party machines and big monied interests.
Trump was able to pull it off but still had to run as a Republican. Look what the Democrat establishment did to Bernie.

Well, Trump essentially hijacked the Republican Party, so there is that. But the answer is that politics requires the financial and organizational support of the two major parties. That’s why Trump is such a miracle.

Too much group think on both sides.

The fact that they list the party next to the candidates name on the ballots.
Seriously.
The whole "A vote for "I" equals a vote for "R" or "D"" mentality is completely ingrained in voter's mindsets.
It's ridiculous.

Because it takes $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to get elected.

Money. Bout it. Independents don’t get $500 million super pacs to pay for a campaign.

Which is the clear way for success for an "independent" candidate.
Third parties are a fool's bargain.

Because the two major parties are in charge of the very systems that control who can run for what and such and they've deliberately created a system which is very effective at ensuring only a Republican or a Democrat has any real chance of winning.
Even when independents do occasionally get elected to Congress, they are largely nobodies with little to no power because all the power rests in the various committees and one of the two major parties will always maintain control of the committees.

Would love to see that stripped away on ballots. Maybe it would cause people to actually research the candidates.
I would go one step further, I would like to eventually reach the point where the party of the individual candidates is not released until after the election.

Because most people who vote want to make sure their vote is not wasted. You have to be in a party to get the attention and get your name out. Also need it to get some money to back you up . I am not sure why Bernie runs for senate as a independent but president as a democrat. He is clearly a democrat.

Money is one thing but also they haven't really set themselves an identity people can recognize. For instance what legislation sponsored or passed by independents can voters recognize? Then to top it off they haven't attracted viable candidates. Doesn't mean they aren't any out there but there isn't a strong grass root movement for them.

on a national level if you win as an independent you will not have good committee assignments or be able to get much done. The party leaders decide pretty much everything.

If only more people would re-think how they define "wasted".

I think it has a lot to do with straight ticket voters. Most voters IMO aren't up to snuff with the actual policies many candidates represent.
I know quite a few voters and none of them even go on the candidates website, they vote based on what the media spoonfeeds them sadly.
