Isn't it enough for black people to be not reminded of their oppressed history? How is having a statue of Robert E. Lee a good thing?
Black people (in general) remind me of their oppression every day.;

Sure am. It doesn't make it look any better for my ancestors. If any owned slaves, I have no idea.
Point is citizens of the United States owned human beings that they treated like any other farm animal.

Because Mitch Lanrieu's silliness has gone so far as to provoke the renaming of the capitol city of The Republic of Texas. Mitch did this to curry favor with the SJW wing of the Democrat party and his black mistress. Nothing more...

point is just about every God damn country in the world did the same thing at one point or another but we have people here and now uniquely motivated to mindlessly seek excuses for guilt across centuries
I don't give a shite what happened 200 years ago. Nothing is changing it and it doesn't affect anything now except for providing a convenient excuse to whine to people who cannot cut it.

Yeah that's not so clear at all.

Sure and our ancestors owned slaves in this country. That's a fact. So why would we want slave owner statues to remind us of their dark history.

You may have stumbled on a great idea.
If we get rid of all that stuff, then we can call bullshite that it ever happened.

My issue with the statues isn’t racism related. By today’s standards Lincoln was a horrible racist.
The issue with confederate statues (to specific confederate leaders, not drafted men) is that they are traitorous. If you fought against the USA I don’t think we should give you a statue. Not sure how that’s a radical position.

Not everyone thinks of it like you. That's the beauty of it. It warms my heart that people like you are offended by some statues from a time that you obviously haven't taken the time to know about. You're offended because someone told you to be offended.

Slavery is a nearly universal experience. Slavery thrives in some form or another today, on the continents of Africa and Asia and exists with dubious legality elsewhere.
Big difference is how conflicted the U.S. was about it. And that conflict manifested itself in a way in which 600K (mostly white) folks died and millions more suffered through one of the world's earliest "industrial" wars.
The Lost Cause was, for lack of a better term, a coping mechanism the South used to recover from the struggle. Jim Crow and Segregation are nothing about which to be proud, but "slavery" seems to be a magic word to justify any sort of historical revisionism.
My main problem is that all of this blame is one-sided solely because of confederate politics and the logistics of slavery. The North would have starved without the agricultural products produced (by slaves) in the South. The North would have had to import raw goods for their textile mills if it wasn't for the raw materials produced in the South.
But because the slaves were held in the South, the great-great grandchildren of white Southerners (whether their ancestors held slaves or not, and - full disclosure, I'm almost certain some of mine did) are the scapegoat for literally every problem the modern black American has.
So, my position is, with all due respect to folks like Tbird (with whom I disagree on this issue in the most agreeable manner possible) - by acceding to the statues coming down, I'm conceding that I am partly to blame.
frick that.

Louisiana should be renamed General Robert E. Lee, Mississippi should be renamed President Jefferson Davis,
and Alabama should be renamed General Stonewall Jackson.
I would like that a lot.

I don't like the idea that these statues are the manifestation of white privilege, and even having this discussion acknowledges that absurd premise in some regard. Same with the anthem protests. These people are saying that America itself, isn't just complicit, but an active and cognizant participant in the oppression of black Americans. frick all of that noise.
