New report details state’s spending on Vermont dairy farms

Vermont funneled over a quarter billion into the dairy industry over the last decade because of the state’s “identity.”

Someone needs to tell crazy uncle bernie that the free market has spoken!

The free market will cut its nose off for fun. See Walmart and their stores full of Chinese goods.

It's like steroids in baseball (or another example, horse racing). If you don't do it, someone else will and you'll lose. So really the only way to level the playing field is to force the entire country/world so stop doing it.

But it's probably not something that helps the farmers anyway. It's probably for CRT training for the cows.

Japan and Germany subsidize the hell out of their manufacturing with draconian tariffs and nationalistic policy.

The end result - good middle class manufacturing jobs, a shared sense of cultural identity and pride. So long as you are ecinomically diversified and have access to other large markets to supplement, why not subsidize important cultural industries?

Do you prefer Chinese Motors and Mexican Ford outsourcing 2 million of your neighbors' jobs the last 40 years?

Often you’ll see these things for failing ag industries that were hit hard by the govt or natural disasters.

For example, corn is higher than its been in a long time. Farmers are now planting corn where they would have planted soybeans to capitalize on it. This will mean less soybeans available. For a dairy farmer or cattle rancher they will see higher prices in feed.

Also take into consideration none of these people set the price on their product. Where a wheat farmer could burn his wheat stand if prices dictate that it would cost more to harvest it than its worth, a dairy farmer can’t, not milk his cows. That’s why during the covid shut down when Americans were buying much less dairy a lot of dairy farmers lost their arse.

A few years back I was reading an article about trade and the strange bedfellows it makes.

An example was California, liberal, freewheeling California. They were spending a boatload lobbying for the, thats FOR THE Iran embargo measures of Trump. Why on earth.

Did you know Cali is one of the largest producers of Pistachios for the US market, know who WAS the largest worldwide producer....Iran.

Funny you mention this because the Federal government kicked off the corporate welfare checks with the dairy industry paying out billions in the 1970’s to farmers so they shut down milk production permanently.

Instant millionaires! Lottery style with no taxes involved...

How do these fruit cake liberals think milk comes about ?

Cow = milk

Well there isn't much of a need to subsidize the ones that aren't failing

Honestly this doesn't seem like a huge deal. Their budget is just under 7 billion. A quarter of a billion spread out over a decade to subsidize an important ag industry isn't the worst thing in the world.
