Naive idealism is the root of a lot of the problem.
People like this shooter don't know what real, actual socialism or communism is like. They read the fairy tales about equality and communal sharing, and think "that sounds nice".
They see the US (and yes, Israel as an example) as the aggressors, the instigators of all this conflict, instead of understanding that there is aggression in ALL directions, and the US (and Israel in the Middle East) won because they have the best resources and plans, and happily happen to be the least undesirable forms of government for their people. And we don't live in a vacuum, as many of these clueless people think. They say "why don't we just leave them alone, and they will leave us alone in turn", when the world doesn't work that way.
I kinda see it as similar to a theory on allergies; that theory says to expose your kids to germs, so their immune systems develop properly. If you raise them without any exposure, their immune systems go nuts looking for "something", and end up attacking itself.
We as a society are in a spot like that now. There isn't really an outside nation we truly fear or are at odds with; China is a bugaboo but we also do tons of trade with them. Probably 75% of the shite in your home is made in China. We can't fathom that they'd really want to upset that balance.
So, we now look for enemies amongst ourselves, since there aren't any elsewhere. I mean, there are, but 99% of the population is never aware of any danger from them, so they don't grasp them as enemies.
