Al gore was a terrible fit for the state, his environmental policies would have affected the LA economy by a large amount, he was socially liberal and sjw, yet still a bunch of baws chose him over W. Ever since then, the state has grown more and more republican, but al gore won or did well in some regions of lousiana that democrats now do atrocious in.

Did W do something on the campaign trail that angered swamp folks?

The move from Dem to Repub hadn't really started yet in LA.

W wasn't a spectacular candidate.

Gore was VP with a fairly popular POTUS. The question should be "why didn't Gore run away with the election?" And the answer is the media couldn't provide enough cover for him. The man is a lunatic and would have been disastrous.

Probably the last time liberals and conservatives voted for the same candidate

2000 candidate Al Gore is 100% different than today's Al Gore. Bush and Gore actually ran a very similar campaign and agreed on many issues. He was always a turd, but that wasn't exposed until after that election.

Anyway, here's a pic of man-bear-pig

Gore got the black vote like every Dem has, so that’s a baseline of 35% of the LA electorate. The rest was a little residual effect of LA’s Cajun Dem tradition started by Huey Long, which is now thankfully almost gone.

The last election before cable talk shows and social media really gained major influence. One could argue 2004 was the last for social media. Things have gotten infinitely more polarized since.

i.e. 2000 was the end of the somewhat sane times.

True that. One of my good friends from Lafayette, typical country boy but still had that Dem holdover mentality at that time. No longer, far from it.

Didn't we have 2 DEM senators at that time? Landrieu and Breaux? We also elected Mamaw Blanco in 2004. The solid red movement was not yet solidified.

Clinton won the state in 1992 and 1996, we still had 2 democratic senators in 2000 as well in Landreu and Breaux and our governor was Mike Foster, the first republican since 1984 in Dave Treen. And Foster was a democrat recently turned republican, and we followed up two Foster terms with Blanco and her Katrina failure....

Why do you start these stupid threads asking questions about old events? W won by a considerable margin considering Clinton won Louisiana in 1992 and 1996.

Social issues weren't as big of an issue in 2000 as they are today. Democrats emphasis on social issues and driving hard to the left is what really drove the South to solid Republican starting in 2000 and solidifying in 2004.

Reagan won his second election here by nearly 20 percentage points. Bush Sr. won by 10.
