When economic growth is dependent on deficit spending and you attempt to reverse that trend you will find yourself in a calculated recession initially. But you will set the path for a better fiscal situation in the out years.
But the economic growth wasn't due to deficit spending. In fact, revenues to the Treasury during the Reagan years actually doubled due to record economic growth. What lead to the deficit was the spending increases that had to be made to the Dems, who were the majority in both houses of Congress during the Reagan presidency, in order to get the tax cuts through the congress and on to Reagan's desk for him to sign.

He was a shitty campaigner who didn’t like to campaign, had no charisma, he ran against someone full of charisma, and he had the Ross Perot problem. He also didn’t connect with regular people and he was portrayed as out of touch and elite. Trump doesn’t have any of those problems.

Ross Perot siphoned off a margin of victory worth of votes.
Had Perot not dropped out and re-entered he may have won.

I’d like to see those naked pics of his daughter that caused him to drop out.

I think he was a little sick leading up to the election but he took his foot off of the gas. I have hated him ever since -RIP, I guess though.

The problem with that "logical assumption" is that exit polls show the "second choice" for Perot voters was split between Bush and Clinton almost exactly evenly, not 75:25.

1) He broke his major campaign promise of "No new taxes"
2) There was a 3rd party candidate (Ross Perot)
3) He was running against one of the most charismatic presidential candidates ever (Bill Clinton)

quote:I'm sure you are correct, but my premise still stands, which is tax cuts caused the economy to grow, which caused the revenue to the Treasury to double, and the congress, led by the likes of Tip O'Neil increased spending over and above the revenue increases. The Pubs of that era were generally just as feckless and cowardly as they are today.
GOP controlled the Senate for the first 6 years of Reagan's presidency.

Bush looked at his watch during the debate.
Clinton walked forward and said, “I feel your pain.”

28 years later, it’s still painful.

This plus a mild recession caused by the gulf war. Then GHWB allowed tax rates to increase which retarded the recovery. GHWB and his team thought there was no way he could lose after delivering the world from Saddam Hussein's maniacal quest to take over a majority of the world oil supply. GHWB just wasn't politically savvy enough to realize his situation.

The little hand grenade with the bad haircut split the Republican vote. Slick Willie only got 42 percent of the vote. Or was it 43? One or the other.
