Amazingly broad brush there. My kids were taught to be ready for college, but unless you had a clear career plan the trades were an option. Probably a much better option. Most of the people my age have raised their kids the same way.

You are basically calling your kid an idiot.

Now take out the degrees which people readily admit are worth going to college for and redo the numbers with net worth at time of death.
That's a completely different argument. And, while I doubt research has been conducted with the parameters you set, it would probably not work out the way you would like simply because most college graduates are able to work longer because the back gives out long before the brain. In addition, the data is VERY clear when it comes to educational levels and crime. roughly 42% of all male inmates do not have a HS diploma. 23% have a GED, 23% have a HS diploma, and just 12% have a college degree.
The data is clear, go to college and you will have more opportunities to make more money versus a HS diploma. No one disputes that.
Having said that, college isn't for everyone. Not everyone that goes to college is successful just like not everyone who forgoes college is subject to a life of poverty and misery.

College was the key to opening doors when boomers were young. Make momey with your brain and not your back. They dont realize its basically a HS diploma now with exception of a few fields of study. They were right for awhile, but things have changed.

Just buy some cheap online degree. It wipes the arse just like the $100K CRT kind.

But you have a college degree, right?

College isn't for everyone, but a college degree in a respectable field isn't useless either.
If you're paying for your childs college and you let him or her study and work towards a degree in any of these social BS classes, you're the idiot, not your child.
I can tell you 100% you might not get asked about you degree but if you have a degree your resume gets moved to the top of the stack in most cases.

get your kids into the trades at a young age and they will either make great earnings little to no debt or own their own empire.

Don’t get a pointless degree and it’s not pointless.

College isn’t worthless…some degrees from some schools are worthless.
Even if my sons wanted to in the trades I told them they still have to have a minimum 2 year degree covering business subjects - even if it’s from a community college. They need to know basic finance, accounting, statistics, using MS Word programs efficiently, etc. so if they do ever want to go out in their own they won’t go bankrupt.

They grew up without the internet and before even public libraries were ubiquitous.
School, and especially a college campus, was THE way to get educated and get a better job, more pay, and a better life.
Back in the 40s and 50s, it was the nation's educational elite that helped educate people on things like socialism, and kept us away from going socialist with regard to medicine and other things.
Many campuses were areas where free speech was celebrated and we saw an expansion and liberalization in the interpretation of our rights. Boomers grew up in a world where the college campus was most certainly a good thing for society. That was their youth, that was the world they lived in when they were at their most formative period in life.
They also grew up in a time when, due in part to WWII, there was a surge in employers that offered benefits with jobs - this was a new phenomenon back then. Better job meant better benefits. Education meant better job.
It's difficult to shake off paradigms you grew up with.
Boomer stuff is easy to understand if you just think about how the world was when they grew up.

There are other professions that require college education such as pharmacy, architecture, teaching, nursing. Then there are other science fields as well.
UK has 1000 engineering students
388 law students
778 in Medicine
1662 in nursing
135 in Pharmacy
3,000 in education
430 in architecture
so about 27%
27,216 students total

I have a degree, and technically you could say I'm a boomer / early Gen X as I was born in Oct of 64.. 65 is start of GenX.
That said, I absolutely do not look down or belittle anyone who desires to learn a skilled trade, (i.e. welding, plumbing, HVAC, or construction). Hell I wish I had more of these types of skills than I do.

Kids working in the gold mines here make 100k plus and just need a HS diploma, they'll pay for your 6 week mining class.

I forgot the time honored MRS degree was important back in the day.

You’ve never applied for a job that required a college degree?

Had a bit of an disagreement with my in-laws recently about college for my kids.
My MIL still believes college is absolutely essential and it would be criminal for us not to blow $100K on some pointless generic business degree with minors in beer pong and critical hate white people theory.

I think a lot of it is that they have been out of the market for so long they don't understand the flood of useless Assoc & Bach degrees we've seen over the last 20-30 years. With that, they aren't likely to see the cash return many blue collar jobs can now demand (especially since, when they were young, everything they knew revolved around having to go to college to get ahead).
A college degree can still be worthwhile (it depends on what you're doing with it), but the more important aspect is continuing education (which is where jobs like welding, A/C repair, etc. come in). Most people may not need a doctorate, nor even a 4-year degree, but in order to get ahead you generally need some sort of extra education on top of K-12 (even if it's beauty school to learn to cut hair).
