quote:

expansive new Pew Research Center survey, mostly conducted in July, breaks the American electorate into nine distinct groups, which Pew calls "political typology." It's something it's produced periodically since the 1980s, but the findings released this week are based on a much larger sample size.

Republicans, in this view, are a coalition of four subgroups:

Faith and Flag Conservatives.

Committed Conservatives.

Populist Right.

Ambivalent Right.

Democrats are also a coalition of four subgroups:

Progressive Left.

Establishment Liberals.

Democratic Mainstays.

Outsider Left.

A large portion of the public -- 15% -- makes up Pew's ninth group: Stressed Sideliners. These are people who don't have a clear partisan orientation, have a mix of conservative and liberal views and may not take part in elections.

Read Pew's descriptions of all of these groups of people. The descriptions are interesting in part because the Republican caricature of Democrats is that they are socialist. The Progressive Left, however, makes up the smallest proportion of both the general public and those who vote or lean toward Democrats

Populist Right, who have less formal education than most other typology groups and are among the most likely to live in rural areas, are highly critical of both immigrants and major U.S. corporations.

They left out the illegal part again. This is so lazy but passes most media tests. I find the condescension in the less educated part astounding considering the make up of the left.

Ambivalent Right, the youngest and least conservative GOP-aligned group, hold conservative views about the size of government, the economic system and issues of race and gender. But they are the only group on the political right in which majorities favor legal abortion and say marijuana should be legal for recreational and medical use. They are also distinct in their views about Donald Trump – while a majority voted for him in 2020, most say they would prefer he not continue to be a major political figure.

Pretty adequately describes me, although first trimester only.

If you could change the severely unhealthy lifestyle of most Americans, have someone else pay for our national defense, and homogenize our population, I’d say you have a shot.

one set of graphs indicates moderates of both parties are not as engaged.
(after all less than 50% vote. 70% register and 70% of them vote
.7 x .7 = .49

Populist and Ambivalent Right are decently equal in these regards. The difference is the later are more degenerates in the way liberals used to be and the former are not.

Seems that would hinge on how much the current status quo is leaving me alone.

None of the above.
Like many Americans and many here, I'm one who believes government should support and protect individual liberties, not take them away ... i.e., whether that pertains to vax mandates, blue laws, the rights of a viable fetus, or the rights of a woman to abort a nonviable one.
