You've got multi-generational families that have lived in L.A. for decades where part of the family is legal, and part is not.
I’m Mexican-American. whose grandparents, both maternal and fraternal, were naturalized citizens. They originally came to the U.S. with their parents as migrant farm workers and eventually worked in the packing houses of Swift and Armour.
They were given absolutely nothing, as a matter of fact, INS or another department actually used to make visits to their houses to make sure their house was in order. And I mean just that, they made sure they weren’t living in squalor, their yard maintained, and they weren’t conducting any illegal activity. By the time I came around, they had been naturalized for years, so obviously I never saw it, but very vivid in my parents memories.
As my grandpa used to tell me, he earned the right to be called an American and he was gonna be damned for some peckerwood to look down upon him for that. It stuck.
It chaps my arse to no end seeing these idiots spitting on their graves.
If you’ve been here illegally for a decade or more that’s on you. The excuse of, if I try to be legal “they” will just deport me is a load of crap, an excuse. They have no issues calling an ambulance, fire, police, or going to the emergency room or birth center.

When I was out there for extended periods a few years ago, there were parts of town in the east and southeast that I would have sworn were actually in Mexico.

So we should not deport anyone?
Sure. Criminals and social services leeches.
Not workers.

And it could all be fixed if the dumbasses in charge would abide by ICE holds and turn criminals over for deportation.
Homan said from the beginning, they are after the criminals, but if cities and states aren’t going to cooperate with ICE others are going to get caught up in the raids and deported.

Just get rid of criminals, vet the ones who are working and offer a path to citizenship or long term work visa.
Nope. This was the talking back in the Reagan era. Path to citizenship and then we’ll fix immigration. Well, it never got fixed. If congress wants to fix it, stay away from the microphones and fix it.
Otherwise, anyone who is picked up and illegal gets deported.

You dont trust Trump to fix the border?

Almost all of them are paid in cash and the people who employ them probably know that there person is illegal.
This seems to be a big part of the problem. Why not as their employer give them resources to where they can find a path to citizenship or be here legally? Not only are the employers knowingly hiring illegals but they're also knowingly complicit in tax evasion schemes. These people should be paid on the books even if it's through a 1099 contract.

They can apply for legal status if they are married to an American or have American family. They have to go back to their country to do so.
Will millions of people do this? I doubt it.

The situation has gone on too long and gotten to entangled to deport every illegal.

Trump has taken the border from a flood to a trickle.
Two different issues. People will always get across the border. You keep the border as tight as possible, as Trump has done.
Once they are beyond the border and into cities, then the city and state must work in conjunction with the feds to deport people when they are caught.

So basically, keep the incentive for millions to continue trying to break into our country and jump ahead of those doing it the right way?
This is a stupid idea.

When it comes to illegal immigration, Los Angeles is... complicated
It's really not. If you're here illegally, you must go back and get in the back of the line. It's simple.

They attend regular L.A. churches, which usually have a Spanish-only service/mass
Perfect. ICE needs to start checkpoints there.

So is sending a father to prison when he killed a bunch of people while driving drunk. Not sure why he should get any more leniency during sentencing compared to someone without kids.
Creating a cocoon of a family life that would be disrupted if you were legally separated from that family should not be some defense you get to throw up against immigration officials.

Legal or not legal.
It's not complicated at all.

With any problem or difficult circumstance, once it passes a certain point... there is no room for "complicated" circumstances.
The only thing that matters is correcting the problem before it gets any worse for the good of the majority.
This is that.

Not workers.
Does that worker have health insurance or cash to pay any and all medical bills? No, so they get "free" care in the ER that all the rest of us pay for.
Does that worker have adequate liability car insurance so they can cover any damages caused to others in accident? No, so all the rest of us pay obscene car insurance to cover for the uninsured.
Does that worker have children? Whether born here or not, those children are attending our schools that we all pay for, but if their parents are working under the table they are not paying taxes. Maybe some minimal property taxes but nowhere near the cost of actually providing an education, let alone a bilingual education, to their children. If their children are citizens, they are eligible for all the social services - Medicaid, WIC, SNAP, etc - that they can easily qualify for because their parents have no legit income to report, even if their cash income would disqualify them.
We have work visa programs for seasonal workers; those people aren't being deported because they and their employers did all the required steps to make it legal.
