But I know a LOT of people who lie about their golf scores.
My golf score is roughly equivalent to my IQ, 131

So you're also one point away from MENSA like everyone else in this thread?

The truth is a person with an IQ over 140, who is already in the thread, if probably far more likely to read it than someone with an average IQ. To that person the, I'm guessing, 500 words don't strike them as the ramblings of Marcel Proust and the time that it takes them to read it and digest it are minimal. They are also far more likely to be interested in discourse even if the subject matter is not directly germane to their lives.
Most people can pick out the more intelligent posts on a forum rather quickly. It is hard to post intelligently if one is not mentally well endowed but it is easy to make stupid posts even if you are Kim Ung-yong. Self-reporting IQ on a forum is like self-reporting dick length where most people in the discussion have never seen a ruler and have little concept of an inch.
A person with an IQ over 140 would likely know that long forum posts are usually not read. And thus choose a more judicious use of their time, such as writing an academic paper. Or solving cold fusion.

I reading through the post to see how long it told for an old poster to cite this number. Good job

I have a much higher than average IQ.
Donald Trump is a billionaire.
Donald Trump is President of the United States.
Odds are not looking good that my IQ is going to put me in either billionaire status or the White House anytime soon.

Well, yes. Isn't that the rule?

Tldr
Brevity is the soul of wit and wit denotes intelligence

Honestly, I find everything about this post believable, except for the bolded statement.
With a 172 IQ, then your score would be at the 99.9999181946 percentile, and by my quick calculation (with my lesser intelligence) would be higher than all but 263 out the 323.1 million Americans.
And since about 107 billion people have ever lived (according to google), and if we assume the distribution is the same across the world, and across time, then you would have a higher IQ score than all but 87,356 people in history. And since we've gotten progressively more intelligent with each generation, and the US likely skews higher than most of the world, you're one of the most intelligent people to have ever lived, if you have a score of 172.
Completely fair, and I respect your skepticism. I have no idea what I’d score on one now, but I remember the score because the school counselor had me talk to a really annoying Mensa rep a couple weeks later. I don’t think it’s anything special, and never cared enough about how IQ is measured to investigate it. I’m just good at pattern recognition and bar trivia.

147 in 1990, but I am waaay stupider after reading this board.

I took the Mensa home test a couple of years back to see if it would be worth my while to sit for the full blown test and try to get in.
Turns out my IQ was measured at 130, but I needed 132.
I looked into Mensa (my SAT score qualifies me), but it doesn't look like they do anything worthwhile so I didn't bother.

Perhaps we should ask what their occupation is and calculate from that. Probably more accurate.

I've taken two as an adult. I have a terminal degree and I am a college professor. I have qualified for the Jeopardy contestant pool but I am too ugly for television.
128 as a 25 year old Ph.D student and 126 as a 38 year old professor.
I'm getting dumber in my old age.

quote:Actually this is almost exactly how we would expect it given the regession towards the mean. We would expect a score to be closer to 100 than the previous score, with the most extreme scores expected to have a larger difference.
128 as a 25 year old Ph.D student and 126 as a 38 year old professor.
This is why one poster's ridiculous high score of 150 was difficult to believe in its own, because it's so unlikely, but the 161 he/she reported the second time around, is not only more unlikely given the score itself, but it's completely counter to the expected regession toward 100 following the previous score.
So while I'm sure other posters inflated or flat out lied about his/her score, that's only poster who was presented the scores as completley legitimate, they I'm pretty confident is lying.

My job as a combination of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science (I am an engineer and work with industrial control systems) So for me this is pretty close
