Nuclear ArmageddonEven with the slow mutual nuclear disarmament since the end of the Cold War, the U.S. and Russia each have thousands of nuclear warheads at the ready. As Eugene Chow noted earlier this year, the entire stockpile of U.S. intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) — 448 active — is essentially aimed squarely at Russia. Russia's hundreds of ICBMs are probably returning the favor.

quote:

A conventional war in Eastern EuropeThis is the other scenario that never happened in the Cold War. Now, the possibility of scenario one (nuclear Armageddon) makes this one almost equally unlikely. But for the sake of argument, let's assume this hypothetical U.S.-Russia war breaks out in Ukraine, and that other NATO forces are supplementing U.S. troops, ships, and aircraft. Unlike in the Asia-Pacific, where the U.S. keeps China in check (and vice versa, as Eugene Chow explained), NATO provides the United States with a robust military alliance set up specifically to take on Soviet Russia.

quote:

A proxy warShort of a negotiated peace with no casualties, this is the best of the bad options. The U.S. and Russia have already fought a string of proxy wars, the big ones being Vietnam to Afghanistan. In this scenario, the U.S. might finance Ukrainian forces to fight Russian soldiers, with the probable goal of driving them out of Ukrainian territory. Or, should the U.S. or NATO back the Ukrainian army, Russia might fund pro-Moscow separatist movements in Ukraine against it.

best case scenario: billions wasted and thousands (perhaps 100s of thousands) dead.

Worst case: all life on earth dead.

If it's kept conventional, which it probably wouldn't be... the US wins every time.

No one wins in a nuclear war.

I found it pretty funny that the author seems to think Russia would have the naval advantage because it's the home team. I'm so sure. The whole piece of shite Black Sea Fleet would be busted and burning within a day.

And forget the air war being close, too. The U.S. does not lose wars in the air, no matter how good you think your air defense systems are.

About one hour long, lots of mushrooms and glass being produced from them missiles flying overhead. The herds culled would be large in numbers.

The Russian conventional military would get waxed by any of the major western European powers, including the much-maligned France. They'd have a tough time with Poland, and while they'd beat Ukraine, it wouldn't be a walkover. The Russian army is a shadow of the Soviet era, and even then it was largely a hollow force.

If it went nuclear, all bets would ge off.

Well...seeing that NOBAMA has gutted our military to the point the top brass at the Pentagon warn we're barely able to field one fully operational division. IMO, in a conventional war with Russia I believe we'd get our "arse" handed back to us on a platter. Personally I believe that nightmarish scenario [war with Russia-China-Iran] is inevitable. I tell ya...I would not want to be in Poland's [or Israel] shoes right now, knowing they have to depend on NObama to cover their back.

Imagine getting in a fist fight with someone who has a gun on them. You always have to worry that if he feels like he's getting his arse kicked to bad, he might shoot you. That's why it's always best to avoid these scenarios.

Wow, a nuke thread without a Dr Strangelove reference.

Buck lays it on the line.

Not saying we'd get our hair mussed, but nor more than 10-20 million casualties. TOPS!
