What Were You Doing When 9/11 Happened?

I had been in law school all of two weeks. I went to class that morning and there was talk of a plane hitting the WTC. After morning class, I drove back to my little rundown apartment and listened to the radio. As I ate lunch, I listened with a mixture of surprise, concern, and impending dread. It was difficult to believe the towers had collapsed.
The mood in class that afternoon was somber. Everyone knew there was a lot of dead people, war was ahead, and our country had changed possibly forever. As I left Emory again that afternoon I saw people selling newspapers on the steeets.
I remember one of my professors taking a moment to address the subject at the beginning of class about a week later. He said, “People, it’s bad. And it’s going to get worse.”

What was I doing?
when the second plane hit, was watching CNN from BG753 in the Pentagon, 30 seconds later the sirens went off and we began to evacuate the building...
found out a bit later that 90 minutes separated me from being a tombstone at Arlington...

I was walking into 7th grade homeroom, and our teacher had the tv on showing both buildings of the WTC covered in smoke. They also kept showing the replay of the 2nd plane hitting the tower. It was a very confusing morning.

Was on assignment for 2 weeks in Boise, Idaho.
A few months earlier I was in NYC on assignment. Visited the WTC while there.

I was working and had WJBO radio on when they broke into the broadcast with the news. I ran into my bosses office and told him to turn on the tv, where we saw images of the first tower on fire.

I was in the football office in a meeting. The secretary came in and told us turn on the tv. About an hour later the AD had us in a meeting trying to decide how we handle this with everyone. That was the worst day the campus was a ghost town, the kids did not want to practice at all, and there was sadness and disbelief in the building that seemed unreal then it turned into anger on Thursday. We played that Saturday at SEMO and kids were crying mid game, it was nuts.
The best thing though was we tried to keep a normal routine and it helped somewhat, as nobody on the staff just watched the coverage through the week.

1st grade classroom. Don't remember much other than we saw AF1 fly overhead when GWB went to Barksdale AFB

The actual 9/11 was my freshmen year at LSU. I had a student job at the wildlife and fisheries building downtown. We watched it on tv for an hour or so before being evacuated. All federal buildings were cleared out that morning by about 9:30. Went to an animal science class at 10:30 and nobody mentioned it. Spent the rest of day watching tv and skipped my other classes.
I came in and my wife said, "Did you hear about Hillary? She collapsed at a 9/11 memorial."
I responded "That's terrible. What was she doing at a 9/11 memorial?"
That's when I realized it was HRC and not our friend also named Hillary.
Then I busted out in laughter and went to youtube to see it for myself.

Westbound I-10 driving up the highrise when the first report came of a fire in one of the towers. At work all we did all day was sit around dumbstruck while we watched and listened to all the horror unfold.

i was in an aide hour my senior year at HS. 2nd class of the day. i had been getting attendance and delivering packages and somebody between classes said there was big plane crash in NYC.
went to the library to watch it and just caught the second plane come in to view.
said "holy shite." in front of the librarian and got away with it. whole day was a blur of watching footage in every class. very surreal remembering everything that day and trying to figure out exactly what happened.
when i got home from practice, i watched Bush's speech from the rubble with my dad. i dislike Bush for a lot of reasons, but he delivered that one well.

I was getting ready for class. It's hard to believe it's been 17 years.
