In 1996 Trump was a Democrat and Friend of Bill. Even if he'd been GOP, the circumstances for an outsider campaign didn't really exist. Buchanan was able to mount a challenge, but had no hope of winning.

Presidential elections aren't decided by the popular vote. It shouldn't be taken seriously as the widespread fraud that has been found in this nation.

Bill Clinton pivoted in order to win re-election. He essentially took credit for all the republican legislative initiatives that were part of the "Contract with America" after the 94 wave took the House. 40 years of Democrat reign gone and a party in panic. He saw the train coming and he didn't want to get run over.
This at a time Dems basically had a monopoly on information, from print to news and entertainment. The only counter voices were an AM radio show and a new cable start up. Media were much more affective in shaping perception into reality. Thats how a politician who railed against a legislative agenda turns around and has the gall to take credit for its success......and gets away with it.

The Republican Congress and Newt had Bill on a string. Bill didn’t have core beliefs concerning government, he just wanted to be liked.
Three retired politicians or cabinet officials have stated that Newt was pressing Bill hard to can social security and move to some kind of 401k program (details were not provided). In fact they had a final meeting in the Oval Office and agreed upon the structure of the system and how they would sell it to the people.
48 hours later the Drudge Report posted their story and the plan died on the vine.

Also, Billy only got elected in 1992 because of Perot entering the race. That split the GOP vote because Perot was wanting to get spending under control.
Bill was likable guy in public, Hillary, not many liked and her Hillarycare was a bomb.
