What tariffs did France or the EU have on US imports before Trump?

Also, what are some unfair trade practices that the administration is countering?
I'm legit curious about this since it seems the left has framed it in a way that it was all completely free trade until Trump decided to go the protectionist route. He is pandering to the Midwest wirking class but surely there's more to the story?

I will speak for Canada - check out how much eggs, cheese, milk, meat and chicken costs there.
Tariffs in range of 270 percent.

Not sure about tariffs but Canada also restricts imports of wood products like lumber and pulp wood.

Canada also is a pain in the arse for frequent business travelers. Very protectionist to their work force and trying to gain income tax from people going up there.

I don't think asking questions about trade practices or acknowledging the significance of the Midwest middle class in the electoral college is an indication that one dislikes the United States.
On one side you have people saying that there's unfair trade practices and the tariffs will level the playing field.
On the other side you have people saying the EU had lower tariffs than the US.
Im guessing there's more to this than nominal tariff rates so I came to start a dialogue about it. Also, it's funny how all of a sudden the far left is now clamouring for free markets. That used to be a wedge between establishment Democrats and progressives.
Maybe Trump just wanted to make everyone pro-free trade by being against it?

Well Canada had big tariff on dairy from the US. It was in range of 270%. To get around this, US dairy farmers shipped in ultra-filtered dairy products which were not subject to the tariff. Canada closed that loophole late last year or early this year. Dairy exports from US plummeted.
The EU charges a 10% tariff for US auto imports. The US tariff is around 2.5%. Big discrepancy.
The EU also hits US dairy with 30% tariff on imports. I don’t think US has an import tariff on EU dairy imports.
There are some big discrepancies. Trump is 100% correct.

It's not that what you're saying is unbelievable but can you provide links?
Also, what's with the fixation on dairy? Is it a big chunk if internatinal trade? Seems it wouldn't be very suitable to ship and store it all over the world.

You are really missing the point. He isn’t against free trade whatsoever. He is for fair trade. Everything listed throughout this thread is 100% accurate. Not sure why you can’t use a search engine. It takes about 10 seconds to verify.

I can tell you as someone that works for a Canadian company that does most of its work in the US. That when we try to go to plants in Canada they require only Canadians to operate our units and it is supposed extremely tough to justify an American working there. we have 1 Canadian operator and 7 american. The Canadian works in the u.s. all the time since there isnt much production left in Canada, and its not difficult to allow him access. We will be doing 3 months of work in Canada this summer. We will have to shut down production to allow that operator some time off. We lose 10-15k of profit a day when we shut down.
Also the provinces all have separate licensing to work in so there is a lot of extra fees involved so we have to designate one unit as Canadian certified even though the us and Canada standards are the same.

Besides it wouldn't surprise me if the EU put imports on things like this due to Global Warming since Cows put a lot of methane in the atmosphere.
