As a Catholic we have been getting the cross on our foreheads for as long as I can remember. Some Priest use very little but there are some that really use a lot and it stays on all day.

The ashes used for Ash Wednesday are the ashes from the burnt palms from the previous years' Palm Sunday and blessed.

1. He must have a lot of free time.

2. You underestimate some who are on this board.

People on here do realize that there are Protestant denominations that do ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday, too...right?

I know Anglicans do.

Evangelical
Episcopal/Anglican
Methodist
Baptist (I only know of 1 that did yesterday)
Presbyterian
Lutheran

I see you got lots of down votes, but I agree with you. We are never instructed to bring attention to ourselves in spiritual endeavors, and the ashes are a big spiritual” look at me .”

It’s all for show. More than 3/4 probably couldn’t explain what it means!

Like that guy who started a thread because he wanted to reschedule Mardi Gras so that it would never happen again in March.

Or the sacraments, or liturgy, or beauty as an element of worship.

Although I'm sure some of their Sunday morning powerpoints occasionally have pretty pictures.

We have Baptism, and order of worship, Communion, Marriage ceremonies, NO powerpoints whatsoever... and I'd venture to guess that our worship music is every bit as beautiful Sunday in and Sunday out as y'all's is. We are different... but not enemies, if that makes sense.

We have no need to confess our sins to a Priest for him to then pronounce forgiveness on us, after telling us to do certain acts, first, as there is NO act whatsoever, outside of asking Jesus Christ for forgiveness, by which one may attain forgiveness for their sins.

Heresy. There is only "one true church".

I’ve actually heard a Catholic Priest caution people about making a big show of it.

I know for me it's kind of embarrassing walking around with a smudge on your forehead. It actually makes me be more humble and not so prideful. Furthermore we are called to be disciples of Christ and what better way to show that on Ash Wednesday by wearing your ashes fo all to see.

yes I know yesterday was Ash Wednesday but this seems to be the first year that I have seen like everyone in the media with it.

Obviously Catholics control the media.

I see you point. I guess it boils down to the motivation of the person wearing them and what they are trying to convey.

Heaven forbid you go to church more than you have to. Don’t go out of your way for the guy who died on the cross. It’s not like he went out of the way for you, right? We’re only talking eternal life here, so no big deal.
God is the one who dictates His own worship, and the Christian does not have a God-directed "holy day" outside of the Christian Sabbath.

We can and should worship God with private devotions and family worship daily, or at often as we can, but the Regulative Principle of Worship holds that we are to worship God as He commanded, and not according to our own imaginations, even if our imaginations are directed by good intentions.

Don't tell me. It's yours. And we Protestants might as well quit going, as, apparently, when we pray during church (or I guess any other time), our prayers don't get any higher than the ceiling, because, well, we aren't Catholic and therefore aren't members of the one "true church" and are getting everything wrong and as such, will go to hell. Right?

So that rules out Wednesday night church, Christmas Eve services and Good Friday services?
