A. To protect the good guys from the bad guys.

B. Rehabilitation.

Of course I'm going to say "A" because so many criminals are simply irredeemable.

We keep seeing innocent people murdered, raped and assaulted by people with lengthy rap sheets.

Many of these animals refuse to learn and are honestly happier in prison.

Time to stop the bullshite, build more prisons and put people incapable of operating in a polite Society away for life.

These days it's a place to lock up your political opponents.

I can’t speak for everyone but for me it’s a sexual fantasy.

C. Deterrent to others

The soft criminal justice system is encouraging not deterring criminals and hence the current spike in crime.

Sometimes people are such animals that they need to be kept in cages far away from civilized society.

Profits. They don't give a damn about rehabbing anyone. Keep them filled and operating at the lowest cost and keep that state and federal funding pouring in to have a good margin for ownership and investors. Like any business format except your commodity is humans.

It should be both. I have long advocated for shorter sentences with brutal conditions. I want everone who has ever been in a prison to absolutely dread ever going back. I would prefer sending someone to prison for a year and make them work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week on the chain gang and feed them gruel, over sending them to a prison for 10 years in our current system. The only way they avoid solitary confinement and working 12 hours a day is to get job skill training. They would get double the sentence for the second crime.

If they do go back to a life of crime, maybe they would prefer to take a bullet over going back to prison.

We need far more prison beds and stricter mandatory sentencing.

What do we teach in prison? How not to get raped? We don’t rehab a fricking thing. We use the threat of prison rape to dissuade. We definitely don’t treat people as if they’ve served their time upon release. Congrats on the “rehab,” enjoy working construction or at McDonald’s.

We are already the most criminalized industrial nation on earth. FFS. The last thing we need is more prisons.

It should be rehabilitation for those that can be rehabilitated. Rapists, pedophiles, and murderers should not be included in that number.

Both noble alternatives to punching little old ladies in the head and stealing their purses.

Stop paying people to breed and watch the crime rate plummet.

Personally, I'm glad we live in a country where criminals are punished (supposedly).

There are thousands of people who work these jobs and don't go to prison. Are prisoners too good for them? Is a job at McDonald's or in construction an obvious path to recidivism to you?

This is beyond stupid. Truly. There are tens of thousands of people who are violent and belong in prison. Sit in any court room for a few days and watch the proceedings. Violent offenders plea down charges and get "time served" routinely. We have the most prisoners because we have the most criminals. There aren't a bunch of weed heads taking up prison beds.

B is a side effect at best. A is there because people who can’t behave in society shouldn’t be part of it and, unlike the Wild West, we aren’t allowed to hang people by the neck until they are dead, dead, dead within a week of the sentencing.

Exactly! The experiment didn't work like we knew it wouldn't.
