He will still move to take over the slice of Ukraine along Russia's western border that is primarily populated by ethnic Russians. That area also happens to be the industrial/manufacturing area of Ukraine....steel manufacturing mills, large equipment manufacturers, etc.

I don't doubt it but he isn't going to take over the country as I don't think his military is capable of holding the full extent of Ukraine. Ultimately I think this will be his effort to reign in Kiev and try to get them to do what he thought the former president could accomplish - closer ties to Russia...but that blew up in his face.

No.

But it doesn't matter. We won't anyway. And Putin knows it.

However, as with the British/French in 1938 at Munich, if we projected at least a credible threat to do so, things might be different.

Putin wants:
1. Re-intergration of Crimea into Russia as a Russian owned province.
2. Vassalization of the rest of Ukraine.

At what point do those in the western part of Ukraine become okay with those in the Russia-friendly parts of the country becoming part of Russia?

If there's such ethnolinguistic differences between the two regions, what's keeping it all together? Is there some sort of asymmetric economic reason that explains why the west would want to remain attached to the east anyway?

Where does he expect this to end?
Besides consolidating power and trying to return Russia to a major player in Europe/the world as it was before the fall of the eastern bloc, I think he really wants Crimea back under Russian control.

The area was a part of the Russian SSR until sometime in the late 50s/early 60s when it was gifted to Ukraine. After running out the Taters, the area became dominated by Russians, and they feel more tied to Russia than Ukraine.

I think his belief is that if he puts troops in place, Ukraine will break and agree to cede the lands back to Russia before any meaningful sanctions could have any impact.

If it were me, I'd tell Putin, you keep your collateral (Crimea) and the debt we owe you is canceled. In effect, Putin just bought a peninsula for about $6 billion.

But that's just me.....

Russian people in Crimea...Russian military bases and economic ports...Russian sympathy to put an end to the Homosexual hegemony in that region...it all adds up to his protecting and liberating his kind from the polluted Western interest. Don't laugh!

The UN, Nato, et al...are worthless...unless they are willing to BAN all investment in Russia, and start getting a lot of oil/NG from other sources. Like the US. That would get Putin's attention, and bring him to the table. But they'll keep that Region. They'd go to war for that.

He's already making masterful & major strides toward his goal.

Next he'll take a corridor through Latvia to Russia's naval base there and in the process destroy NATO without firing a shot because NATO will collapse when the US refuses to intervene on behalf of its member Latvia.

exactly. What did GWB do when Putin invaded Georgia? nada. This reflects more that the west is burned out on war, than it does of weak US policy. The polls also reflect this.

I agree that our failure to act is a result of the collective will of the people, but that doesn't change that Obama's methods and actions have weakened our world standing.

That said, can someone read this article from national review and tell me that it's just crazy talk:
