They were used to circumvent salary caps enacted during the world war.

I could see why you hold that opinion since you consistently fall for it and get called on it.

What are the places with multi-party systems that you see as doing much better than the U.S. because of it?

Say what you will about needing a Stanley because they are the “hot” item du jour but i started using one next to my bed for water and I love that thing. Keep one in my truck now too. Sometimes things become popular because they work well!

From your link:

The federal government meddling in the market is what made it ubiquitous.

Currently? Argentina. They are on the right path, and the only way it was possible was a multi-party system. La Libertad Avanza isn't even 5 years old, yet his party dominated the elections back in October.

When's the last time Republicans actually cut the size and scope of government? Sure, we get deregulations here and there, some tax cuts, but they always spend like fricking crazy.

The closest we had to someone who would actually follow through on their rhetoric was Ron Paul, but we ended up w/ John fkn McCain and Mitt fkn Romney.

I used to believe that a two party system was superior, but the evidence clearly says otherwise. Real outsiders who would actually reign in government have almost ZERO shot of winning any meaningful offices in America.

1) Never thought I would feel this way, but the older I get the more that I think that, as a whole, sports are accorded far more importance than they should really have. To me, sports fall under the umbrella of entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. No different from movies or music.

Of course, both Hollywood and the music business used to be "bigger" than they are now. Maybe sports were, too, as I just read where NBC is currently losing money with their NBA contract ( I didn't even know that NBC broadcast the NBA).

Don't get me wrong. I still have an interest in LSU football and LSU baseball. But that stems from being born and raised in the state, as well as having ties to the school (I attended LSU-Shreveport, but obviously it's part of the LSU system).

2) On a related note, I've informally canceled Hollywood. Imo, Hollywood's one and only job, being part of the entertainment business, should be to ENTERTAIN. But unfortunately, WOKE Hollywood started pushing their various left-wing agendas years ago, and now that situation is worse than ever. I don't care what George Clooney's politics are, or Ben Stiller, Jennifer Anniston, etc. But when these (mostly) high school graduates start lecturing me, like Jennifer Anniston weighed in on vaccines and viruses during Covid, it completely turns me off.

During World War II, the federal government imposed wage freezes6 to control inflation, hoping to avoid the hyperinflation Germany experienced after World War I. The War Labor Board exempted employer-sponsored health benefits from wage freezes to prevent labor groups from striking. In response, employers offered health benefits to attract and retain employees without violating wage controls. The employer contributions toward medical insurance were also exempt from income taxes, making it an attractive option for employers and employees.

So just like I said.

What are some things you think are stupid about American society?

1. The word "Panican."

2. Populism in the freest, most prosperous, most comfortable for the most people society with the least racism, most civil rights, and greatest recourse against the government in the history of the world.

3. Grown men "downvoting" on a board like this like 12 year old girls in the 70s making a "slam book."

4. The fact that rap "music" still thrives while rock music has died.

5. Conspiracy theories

6. Going to the grocery store and putting 1 or 2 (or really anything less than 5) vegtables into a plastic bag to check them out. If you're just getting one onion, it doesn't need it's own fricking plastic bag BEFORE you put it in the bigger plastic bag at checkout

7. Refusing to follow the rules of the road

That's just off the top of my head.

Agreed. The simple fact that the corporate media willingly submitted their questions in advance for Brandon's infrequent press conferences should tell any reasonably objective, semi-intelligent person that they are nothing but the propaganda wing of the corrupt Political Establishment.

While that's true, sports (and music, and art) have always captured the emotions of society and are more than just entertainment.

In fact, I would argue that music and art has greatly diminished in societal importance in the last 30 years or so.

But sports in one way and art/music in another way reflect the human soul. Sports allows people to resonate with persistence, teamwork, skill, strength, endurance, perseverance, sacrifice, etc. in ways in which their mundane lives do not often allow.

I agree that society has gradually lost sight of those ideals and has instead succumbed to the basest, lowest common denominator with regard to sports, and materialism and those who trade in it have manipulated that response even further.

I also agree that the value of those ideals shouldn't be about money...they should transcend it.

But society has rejected God, which is necessary for transcendent values.

This is the flip side of this thread, but I do appreciate the uniqueness of British humor. I like American humor more, but I do like the unique aspect of their humor.

This gag is a perfect example:

People who think socialism works and capitalism is a Nazi thing. Even though capitalism beat both over the last 100 years.
