How much money can the country lose during a shutdown?
The 16-day government shutdown in 2013 cost the country $24 billion of lost economic activity, according to an analysis from ratings agency Standard & Poor's.

"The payroll cost of furloughed employee salaries alone – that is, the lost productivity of furloughed workers – was $2.0 billion," the Office of Management and Budget reported in 2013.

Goldwein says shutdowns "waste money" more than they "cost money."

"We’re not going to spend more money. We’re just going to spend it on worse stuff," he explained. "Instead of paying employees to work, we’re paying them not to work."

True. Government shut downs are terribly inefficient.

But so are porous borders. To the tune of $70k per illegal immigrant per year.

That’s what we are paying.

That should be compared to the cost of unchecked illegal immigration over the next 25 years.

Why would we compare something that does not exist?

Is this "shut down" going to be the same as the 13 shutdown? I read that this shutdown would only shutdown 25% of the government and none of it is essential services.

Sometimes you got to lose money to make money. Yes, I know, the government doesn't make money but there are ways for the government to get more bangs with our bucks. This is one of them imo.

I wish the government would shut down permanently.

The 25% is by budget. Since DOD makes up half the budget, is skews the number.

I think more than. 50% of civilian agencies will be shut down, including all agencies in USDA, DHS, and Treasury departments.

Cruz said yesterday that 70% of the government would still be functioning. What I find a little funny - when the last shutdown date happened during the Kavanaugh hearings, I think it was, not a peep was heard from the Dems about it. They signed on without reservations and kept the government rolling.

Most likely not $70,000 worth, but if I'm not wrong, I believe they contribute a decent amount along with the taxes that I'm assuming they pay.

Probably not $70k. In fact, more than 60% of immigrants are on some form of social program you are paying for (part of the 70k).

So if they qualify for a social program, they aren’t producing for the economy. They are a burden.

Let me keep that $70k and I will contribute it to the economy.

How much money will boomers cost their children and grandchildren so Medicare can keep paying for them to shovel down prescription opiods and SSRI’s and to collect their social security? Nobody knows yet because they are still accumulating debt that their children didn’t accrue.

They squandered away the peak economic prosperity they inherited from their parents to be first American generation to leave the world a worse place for their children. That’s also why they want to import another round of slaves from the southern border to pick our crops. Long-term consequences be damned, not my problem.
