Because we want our farmers going bankrupt because of high tariffs, don't we?
Posted on 4/7/25 at 8:16 am to slackster
Depends. Corporate farmers do fairly well. Family owned farms that used to be the backbone of this country then yes they are struggling.

Continued periodic bailouts strengthen the grip Deere et al have on the input side which are monopolies basically.

Why I call it "infrastructure"

I love it when people start spiting off about things they have no clue about

Raised is what I did for my kids, what they did from birth was grow not them raised. Now that they are in their 30’s and grown men tells me how well I raised them

Love posts like these. Now I get to read all the city people's comments that think food is made in a grocery store. Be honest how many of y'all drive squatted trucks and listen to Luke Bryan?

This pisses me off more than anything. Canada is doing the same shite.

And let’s assume that some of these nightmare scenarios begin to play out and businesses begin to close… government is going to have to pick and choose which sectors to prop up and which ones to allow to collapse. All due to a government created problem.

Thats the wonky part of this.
Its our own government creating these scenarios with central planning.

Agreed. Nobody, and I mean nobody has a better marketing team than American farmers and shrimpers.

If the government is bailing them out and our tax dollars are keeping them afloat, then their food products need to be substantially cheaper or essentially free.
If you think food prices are high now, let the government refuse to bail out agriculture and force many farmers out of business. That in turn, will create an actual food shortage, and prices will skyrocket. The increase we have seen in food prices over the last few years had been due to higher transportation costs, not an actual shortage. But I've talked to farmers in several states and they are all in a precarious financial position. Commodity prices are below production costs for all major grains.

Are you doing some sort of RFK MAHA troll?

Farming was in a bad spot already before these tariffs. Several farmers near me have shut down and auctioned their equipment and sold or leased the land for solar projects and a new gas pipeline
With normal to high yields on beans and corn they’re losing 60-120 dollars per acre. It’s not possible to make money at current prices no matter how good you are at farming. Inputs are way too high
I don’t like bailouts either but if you let farmers go out of business grocery prices will skyrocket and generational family farms will end up either in the hands of BigAg, hedge fund groups, or green energy projects. What should be done is use revenue from tariffs and distribute it to affected American companies and farms for relief

I'm not anti-farmer, but doesn't this sound like normal economics?
Too much supply = prices being too low, which causes people to go out of business, which limits supply, and increases prices to where it's profitable?

Yea, let these farmers and ranchers go out of business, And don't worry when there is a food shortage I will sell my beef to you for only a slightly higher price

I’m ok subsidizing small family farms. But not the huge corporate farms owned by the likes of Bill Gates and China.
Most relief programs through the FSA office have income requirements. I use ELAP which covers fish loss due to extreme weather events like hard freezes and excessive heat. You have to make under 900k annual net personal income to qualify
