Only on the PT can a poster opposed to government taxes and tariffs be thought of as a defender of China.

they won't be as cheap though

Don't bet on that. The cost of labor on mass produced goods isn't significant in a lot of cases. The costs to ship stuff around the world isn't cheap. The prime drivers tend to be the costs of raw materials.

Building manufacturing in the midwest on a rail line would very likely be competitive with chinese manufacturing. The reason china become popular was our government was bought and paid to create regulations rewarding companies to move their business to china.

This is why you are hearing about so many people on chinese payrolls recently (state governors, other congress folks, professors, etc.)

Our sources are back to work after a small increase in the days they closed for the spring holiday.

I am sure the Chinese government’s quarantine actions have impacted their economy but how much it interferes with inputs for US manufacturers we cant measure yet.

The facts are simple. Policies in the USA have given the Chinese opportunities. If we want to bring more manufacturing jobs back to the US we would do better to change our domestic policies. For example,we have real advantages in things like chemical manufacturing because of our natural gas resources we should take advantage of but every time you cut the TV on some lawyer is advertising lawsuits against drug and chemical companies.

If the American consumer has to significantly more for an American-made product, say 20-30% for any given purchase, is that cost off-set by the fact that the money spent on the product stays in country?

Not really.

The thing to consider is if the consumer saves 20% buying an imported product he then has more discretionary income to spend on higher value goods and services.

It is just not true that trade deficits hurt our economy.

They are clearly already putting something in things that is turning so many supposed males into soy boys.

This is why stopping the trade imbalance is so important.

It also highlights why we should NEVER depend on a foreign nation to produce the bulk of anything we might need in times of crisis.

Who do you want to put in charge of what should and should not be imported????

I’ll take the markets allocation and you can keep the big government central planners.

Yep. Saving 20% on a pack of magic markers for my kids has helped me save money for a new f250.

This underscores my main point during the tariff wars: a country that doesn't make enough of its own shite eventually becomes the bitch of the country that does.

It has.

Think of this way—I assume you are not working for a Christmas tree light manufacturer who can compete with your actual employer because the government tariffed Americans buying imported Christmas lights so much you are now needed to make those.

Then you take your chances.

We cannot allow our supplies of products critical to the well being of the nation. To be controlled by other nations.

Your main supplies of food, fuel, medicines, and weapons should never be subject to the whims of a foreign nation.

surgical masks ,gowns and latex gloves being predominately made in China

Wuhan is a major production area for disposable garments (masks, gowns, smocks, aprons, sleeves, hairnets, etc.) and the manufacturers we import from are all on allocation. Chinese government has stepped in and seized stock on some goods and we're working hard to cover our customers normal monthly usage levels.

We're just coming out of the Chinese New Year holiday so U.S. distributors should have already placed extra orders to get through this time. Those containers are on the water. But, the virus has extended the plant closures.

The Chinese tariffs hit these items early on and manufacturers were already visiting potential sites to move some production capacity to other countries. But, plant start ups take time.

We're going to have to bring out the stick at trade deal negotiations with the UK if they insist on letting Huawei develop their 5G infrastructure.

It will be problematic to say the least for their standing in the 5 eyes.

Huawei is a front for Chinese intelligence masquerading as a tech-smart phone company.

It would be racist for the UK to question the Chinese.

I order viruses for my research lab from China. They called me last week saying my orders will be delayed for a while due to the outbreak situation.

Like during Katrina the threat of disasters affecting prices allows corporations to gouge prices.
