22 million people in the U.S. were infected with H1N1... did it overwhelm our healthcare system?
H1N1 hospitalized people at a much lower rate. So let's just assume Bossert is lying for some reason. Tell me about what's happening in Italy. They seem to believe that they have more patients than they can scale capacity to handle. Are they lying? If not, why are they having so much trouble?

All these cats are always hoping no one does the math.

If a patient needs mechanical ventilation, which many who catch this virus do, your suggested course of treatment is a waste of perfectly good Robitussin since the patient will very swiftly die.
He should have prefaced it pertained to the 99+ percentile who don’t require it. Let me apologize in advance for his careless post

Only 120,000 critical care beds in the entire country

The trouble is that all the usual pathology in the ICU will still be there and hospitals don't run excess ICU capacity since it's so expensive. There's not a lot of excess capacity.

Socialized health care...

They have a total of 660 critical care beds in the region affected with 16 million citizens?
Maybe.
ETA: St. Louis has 10% more capacity (not counting LTACs) with a much smaller geography and 13.5M fewer people.

the issue is that those beds are normally already filled, for the most part, you then tack on say a 30-50% increase in demand for those beds. that's when you have an issue.

Not much panicking and going to a hospital will do anyway....
Exactly. It’s a virus.

And if it gets worse, THEN go to a hospital. To prevent it from running into pneumonia.
You know...like the flu.

Re-read what he wrote. He's talking about reaching 1% in any one area, not necessarily 1% across the country. Absent intervention, that could very much happen and right now we are not aggressively intervening.

Just because it's Match day does not mean that medical students will be having secks at the hospitals where they are rotating.

The LTACs in St. Louis are never full. We have 7 LTACs that could provide vents and they currently have probably 10-20 beds each available.
Could it strain the system? Sure. Will it strain the system in the way that Italy is being strained? Not even close.

“If we fail to take action, we will watch our health-care system be overwhelmed,”
Based on this statement, I know why the frick is no longer employed and is "former"...
