All motorists in France are required to have a safety vest by law. They're the ultimate nanny state

Was that one guy literally waving his white flag at the police?

How very French of him.

Really? I never knew that.

Jesus, that is sad. Soon, they'll all have to wear floaties at the beach. They'll have their gross, hairy euro titties hanging out, but they'll have big orange floaties on their arms. Soon, Pierre. Soon.

Impossible. People, especially enlightened European socialists, will happily pay carbon taxes to save the planet.

No joke.

Power is centralized in France to the ninth degree, and the president is in many ways a king. Macron unliterary lowered the speed limits across the country last year, for example, to "fight climate change."

It's strange to spend time there, as an American, because they are so statist, and they are so socialist.

Americans take a certain joy in free will, and we all enjoy the privilege of making mistakes. The French government insulates society from the cost of their behavior. You have a small upper crust that is rich, your lawyers, doctors, bankers, and government officials - and then you have everyone else, and while they're comfortable, they're poor by any objective measure. Those people are taxed to annihilation, but enjoy things like a wine list, when they go to the hospital. They also enjoy a silly amount of vacation every year.

While India, Russia and China DGAF. The cleanest countries in the world are supposed to subsidize their lack of environmental standards, interesting policy.

This is what I never understood about the Paris Climate Accord....the developing countries like Russia and China got paid to create more carbon and prosper while the USA got fricked. It made no sense whatsoever and yet the MSM was all about it!

There’s this astonishing ignorance about energy in the west. You have these politicians who believe that there’s some miracle alternative to fossil fuels.

There isn’t one, and there may not be a viable alternative for decades.

These taxes will just make poor Europeans even poorer - and you can’t assume that the extra funding for fossil fuel alternatives will get us any closer to “green energy.” That’s not how research works.

Much of it is unproductive, and researchers have a limited capacity to absorb extra funding. The more you poor into research, the more likely it is that you’re simply wasting your money.
