As an old school Catholic

Mortal = you knowing did it
Venial = was accidental

Mortal = knowingly eating meat on Friday
Venial = forgetting it was Friday when you wolfed down McD's 1/4 Pounder

This is why need to bring back nuns and corporal punishment!

Yeah...nothing like having to eat seafood to prove how good of a Catholic you are.

While you may have muttered that under your breath out of earshot, never loud enough to be herd by said penguin. You were going to burn in hell AND get beaten back & blue before you got there.

When I was in 5 or 6th grade, the nuns took us on a field trip to New Orleans. We rode a river boat, went to the wax museum, etc.
It just so happened the field trip was on a Friday during lent and they took us to Burger King to eat. Not having the chance to eat out for fast food at that time, I ordered a Whopper, not thinking much of it. As I was eating, i gazed over at the neighboring table,
and sister Claire and sister Angela were giving me the stink eye as they ate their fish sandwiches! Its not my fault they chose Burger King!
Good times!

Wrong.

For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent."

Says you.

If I knowing ate meat on Friday I got a beating from the nuns.

You may be right on paper but I had the welts to show how it really went.

I think the old school nuns were actually escaped Nazi's hiding out in the cloister, or sadists, or both.

I feel your pain and confusion my brother!

My favorite part of Catholicism.

No meat on Friday but gorge yourself on shrimp, crawfish, crabs, fried fish etc. I’m sure Jesus just loves that type of sacrifice in his name.

Reminds me of celebrities who donate their time to raise money by playing in a golf tournament. How many would volunteer to dig ditches?

I never heard this. Is this another made up work around?

it’s been the rule since Vatican 2

Even Jesus fasted, so it’s not made up

Why would it have to be a work around, as you call it?

Every religion that I’m aware of that has established fasting practices has exceptions for health, age, etc.

Not eating meat on Friday isn't fasting
