The democrats lost over 1,000 state seats while Obama was president so they probably are pretty concerned about their shitty position nationwide

The media will spin this as a Bellweather for 2018, but it doesn't mean jack shite. Gillespie sucks and Va has become a solid blue state anyways.

Gillespie Is Bush/McCain/Romny era GOPe. That’s a losing formula.

CNN: Gillespie embraced Trumpism but not Trump. What does that even mean? They are one and the same.

Since Democrats haven't won an election in a long time they're going to act like this is a big deal.

Virginia is Blue, Pett; Hillary won it by 5. They'll never vote Trump/Republican; though Trump can let them suck hind tit for the duration.

Why did Republicans have a super majority in the statehouse until tonight if VA is so blue?

Why was Vitter the first republican senator from LA since reconstruction?

Gillespie: 45.3%

Looks like Trump really dragged him down
Well this is kind of deceiving since about 5.9% of the 2016 votes went to third party or write in candidates.

If you only compare R and D votes, Trump got 47.2% of that share for a 5.7% loss. On the other hand, of the R and D share, Gillespie has about 45.5% of that share losing by about 9.1%.

In addition, despite 1.2 million fewer R and D votes, Gillespie is losing by about 21,000 more votes than Trump.

I have no idea if this election has anything to do with Trump, but Gillespie is severely underperforming Trump In 2016; Although, that could be a Gillespie issue or a opposition swing that usually happen in the elections following a presidential election.

It's cnns attempt to tie it to trump. The same districts that voted trump last year voted republican this year. Sorry toddy.

I think Trump has made a big enough arse of himself in the eyes than more than enough people, and you'll see that play out in elections in 2018. House members won't want his endorsement. Senate members in races definitely won't want it.

Too early to tell if this election is an indicator, but if you have Trump braying for you come 2018, there's a good chance you'll lose your seat.

And just about every one of them saw a shift blue, some of them significantly.

Toddy I am surprised at the margin (although one quinipiac poll did nail it), and I think it should send a signal to the congressional republicans that they need to pass tax reform and infrastructure in the next few months.

I don't want trump to lose 1000 seats for his party like Obama did, but it could happen.

Such is life when your party is in power.

Congrats, though. I am happy that you are happy that your party finally exceeded expectations.

Only thing that makes me relieved is that I do not have to worry for another year.

So Dems lost the seats in those districts, but the races were closer than trump's. That is your referendum against trump?

I know you are kind of a politics junkie so you like this kind of stuff....

It is absolutely incredible how the states of West Virginia and Virginia have totally gone in complete opposite, ying yang directions over the last 20 years.

Virginia was a reliably republican state even when clinton won handily twice. West Virginia was stalwartly democratic, and even voted for dukakis. Clinton crushed it there in 92 and 1996.

Compare the two states now. WV is the most republican of all the states, while VA is turning blue very quickly.

It's interesting how dynamic and evolutionary our politics can be.

Hell, it wouldn't be a total surprise if in 50 years the republican party would be winning the gays. , and the poliboard would be strictly dem.

I like how a race no one was talking about until today is supposed to be some huge victory for the Dims.
