US Treasury Sec says 90% of trade deal complete (from this morning)

South China Morning Post...
quote:
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said a trade deal between China and the United States was 90 per cent completed, ahead of a high-stakes meeting between the country’s two leaders at the G20 summit this week.
In an interview with CNBC, Mnuchin said: “I think this is going to be a very important G20.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet on Saturday on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, to discuss the trade war the countries have been locked in for almost a year.
Both countries have levelled billions in tariffs against each other, in a conflict that expanded to a clash on the technology front, with the US blacklisting Chinese telecoms giant Huawei and five Chinese supercomputing companies.

Calling IB.....you OK brah?

Fingers crossed
Whatever the deal Trump will declare a huge victory and that will be fine with me.
The truth will be the Chinese will buy some more commodities from us to lessen the trade deficit but that will have little impact on our overall economy. The big changes will be regarding IP and financial liberalization in China and that will aid China and US multinationals.
Hopefully a deal will be reached closer to what Kudlow and Mnunchin would want and further from what failed democrat politician Navarro wants.
Most of my critics here will declare it a great victory for America but it will in reality do little relatively speaking for the US economy.
I will be happy if the tariffs disappear regardless of who thinks they win or lose.

Ban bet? If it's a huge victory, you can never post again... ever. Not even as an alter

I would be interested in how you define huge victory.
Me I would define it simply—no more tariffs.

Trump has repeatedly said this is what he wants; it's up to the rest of the world if we get there.

No more tariffs will be a great victory for Americans.
I was in an interesting meeting with a relatively high up official in one of the cabinet level agencies in DC recently. The guy is a political appointee. Although it was not expressly said I gather there is a lot of disappointment among many in the administration that USMCA was not put to bed before the republicans lost the house. The apparent culprit—Wilbur. He was really working hard to maintain the punishing steel tariffs on Americans who import Canadian and Mexican steel and the Canadians would have none of that. Today they are having to bend over backwards with Pelosi to save face on USMCA and Trump is pissed. I think Wilbur and failed democrat politician Navarro are sort of back bench right now which is good for America. (What qualifications does a politician who lost the race for mayor in San Diego who ran on bashing conservatism have to be representing the USA in trade talks??)

[throw in the damn towel gif]
Dipshit

I am in China right now. All my suppliers are crying about a lack of orders. All of them have laid off staff and gotten lean
There is a major property bubble about to explode here. There are countless high rise condos going up. Cranes across the skyline everywhere. Problem is, many of the ones built the past few years are half empty. No retail spaces leased on the ground floor. It’s insane.
As it is been explained to me; everyone aspires to own a “flat.” Problem is, prices have doubled the past five years. In spite of that, more and more inventory is being added. Real estate is part of GDP so they just keep building a building to make the numbers look good and keep people employed
Strangest real estate situation I have ever seen. The building (residential and commercial) are not particularly well built so they degrade quickly. The buyer actually loses value every year in most instances. It’s like everyone is in a double wide. Enough time passes and it is worthless.
There is no secondary market to take depressed properties and fix them up. That doesn’t move the GDP needle enough I guess. So there are all these beautiful new buildings surrounded by crap that is 10-15 years old
They can’t afford to blow this situation up so I suspect Ji is ready to make a deal.

Certainly liberalizing financial laws in China will be huge for the Chinese economy and that is a goal of the 301 tariffs.
Backward politicians in China are fighting it but Liu He is for it and is pushing it in China. Trump is punishing Americans who buy from China in hopes of getting the laws changed so US companies and banks can more easily invest there.

Have you ever posted an intelligent addition to a thread on tariffs?
Posted on 6/26/19 at 6:54 am to I B Freeman
For a self proclaimed tariffs expert you really don’t understand them.
Posted on 6/26/19 at 6:59 am to I B Freeman
Agreed. I’ll be happy to just see the tariffs go away.

A note to the DV'er: the Mnuchin interview just got played on CNBC. Mnuchin definitely did not say we are 90% there. He said we WERE 90% there.
IOW, nothing has changed at this point.

Chimpanzees are 98.8% human genetically.
Huge differences hide in the little numbers.
Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler probably agreed on 90% of life’s issues, but they kept bombing each other.

Ive posted this before....But about every 3 months, China pumps as much money into its economy as Obama did during ARRA, or about 800 billion worth. Their credit situation is 1000x worse than ours was during the 2008 crash. Only they dont have accountability, or crazy shite like Mark to Market so when the shite hits the fan in China, and it will, they might just start bombing anyone close by to keep things under wraps. Its going to be that bad.
And anyone here saying tariffs are hurting us is completely insane. the chinese literally cannot buy enough soybeans for their pork from anywhere else in the world. they have to get them from us so the stupid bastards are putting tariffs on themselves.
Moreover, if you have seen a drop in their consumption, its because half their goddamn pork supply is dead from Pork Ebola or some such. Seriously.
How we ever let it get this bad with them is beyond me. They are almost too stupid to function yet here we are.
