But... Why the race to be the first to retrieve a weather research balloon?

Why does that matter at this point? Is the belief that China has to physically collect the tech on the balloon in order to see what is on it? I refuse to believe that China wasn't getting real time information during that flight.
Also. Has the Chinese government came out and acknowledged the balloon is theirs?

I made that call 5 minutes after the balloon was shot down. 30-40 years ago that CCP balloon would have been disposed of before it reached Alaska.
