Its fricking retarded to not allow employees sick time.

Im sure that company suffered by having smart companies poach good employees by offering them better benefits. The liberals like to manipulate facts, we don't need laws mandating sick leave when most companies offer it anyways. The ones that don't put themselves at a disadvantage to keeping talent in their company. If the unskilled labor wants sick leave I suggest making themselves harder to replace.

Your wife should've found a better place to work.

she didn't even ask in the interview process - what professional organization doesn't offer sick time? She just assumed that it was the case. She didn't even find out until she called in sick, and they told her she had to take a vacation day.
She quit the job, like any rational person would but did end up working there for about a year/18 mos
But shame on management for doing this.

Corporatism at its finest, and it's only getting worse as the oligarchy continues to chip away at the few benefits the American worker actually does have. Shameful.
But you know what we do have? Jobs

Do you really not realize that actions have consequences?

it was a non-profit, which is even more bizarre.

at least she was smart enough to leave after that. I prefer letting companies dig their own grave. If another company moves into that area doing the same thing as this one but offers benefits they could bury them.

No it's actually pretty logical. Profitable companies can offer their employees more advantages.

I have lots of paid sick time and vacation.

She has a bit of job hopping syndrome, probably 11 jobs in the past 17 years. Between that and my 4 professional employers, not once have we had a professional job that didn't offer sick time.
Even one hourly gig she had offered it. While she should have asked, I think most people reasonably assume a professional organization offers sick time. They went over benefits with her, but failed to mentioned the sick time issue in that overview.
the organization also had a rule that you were not allowed to wear capris to work. Again, she didn't ask about that, and was chastised for wearing capris to work. They also banned dyed hair.
It was all very bizarre, especially since it was a left leaning non profit.

no, but I certainly wouldnt ask about sick time in the interview process - so what are your rules around sick time? Yeah, that is going to look bad.

Tell you what hoss start your own company or buy the one you work for and give your employees whatever you want but until then have warm glass of STFU.

actually in my experience non profits usually offer pretty nice perks b.c they can't compete on salary.

Yep, and we work the most...This country blows in helping it's hard-working citizens but for some reason the populace defends it as some moral issue.
It's the plantation mentality...corporate America works you to death - doesn't give you squat in health-care...private health care is just out to make a profit and is the old line...deny, deny, deny...like any insurance company.
And yet - everybody sides up with the big corp America (of which they are getting no slice of the pie) and says...thank you master for keeping socialized medicine out of here and keeping us sick and in debt.
It's like no one has read on their own or even bothered to see the film Sicko...of which they won't believe and many deny...despite all of us knowing tons of people in the same desperate situation.
US is crazy when it comes to vacation and sick leave...Europe gets two months vacation.
We are a sick nation...ruled by corporations who brainwash idiots into working non-stop all the time...for the good of the good ol' USA.

How old are you? This started back in the 90's where I live. When you got your first job, you would get 2 weeks of vacation and 5 days sick leave.
Guess what? People were calling in sick when they could work, so they changed the policy: 3 weeks vacation/sick leave combined. If you need longer, have to go on short-term disability (basically sick leave paid at a lower rate). You can also buy AFLAC insurance or something similar.
I don't see the problem?
