Weird. Haiti actually originally implemented a Constitution that mirrored America's.
I am always told Anerica is just an "idea" and who the people are inside the borders are irrelevant as long as we have our Constitution and Liberty.
Weird how that "idea" was not strong enough to keep Haiti in tact, who has undergone roughly 50 new governments since.
Must have just been bad luck on their end.

America makes a lot of places worse but hard to say that with Haiti. Another reason why we should mind our own business and fix ourselves instead of these shithole places.

quote:I vividly remember, arriving at my 2nd duty station in 1994, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. 3rd day there, the Command Master Chief had me and two other newbs manning the front desk of the hospital, processing busloads of Haitian refugees, trying to escape the Haitian civil war that our Coast Guard and Navy had picked up. They were being screen for tuberculosis. A disease almost unheard of in the USA, but common in very 3rd world countries. Clinton was POTUS and was about to grant them exile to the USA.
An escalating gang turf war in Haiti has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis that has displaced around 200,000 nationwide and left some 5.2 million people - nearly half of Haiti's population – in need of humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations.
Here's the thing that struck me the most. The CMC handed us several large plastic basins to put under the counter we were behind. Confused, I asked what these were for. Master Chief quickly responded, "To throw under them if they start urinating or defecating! Most of them have never seen a toilet!". This was in the hospital lobby. A few months later, all the non-essential personnel and all family members were sent back to CONUS. The golf course was converted into a tent city to house about 25K Haitians, and apparently it was common for Little Johnny to look out his window, and see a woman walking and suddenly a man mounting her from the rear.
Weird that the island of Hispaniola is divided right down the middle, with the Dominican Republic on one side, and Haiti on the other. Yet, polar opposites of each other as far as culture, violence, progress, and education.
That was my young self's first experience with just how different our world is.

Haiti is, dare I say, a shithole country that is quite literally cursed. Americans have no business being there in the first place.

US Embassy in Haiti which BTW fell last month is telling US citizens to GTFO tonight
Who would be stupid enough to be there to begin with?

Marine Security Guard Detachment, Private Contractors, Government Officials, Businesses, and Citzens. Not all of these are stupid and most are here because of our foreign policy. Some dumb tourists and other citizens visiting family.

Clinton’s didn’t do them any favors, and their poor kids got abused and sold as sex slaves. I bet the Clintons aren’t welcomed there, for damn sure

To see the great work the Clinton Foundation performed!

Sounds like a good reason to bring more Haitians to USA.

Yeah I don't see any African Union countries rushing out right now to save Haiti but that's just me.
I'm guessing the US pays Kenya to go police Haiti because they believe it would be bad PR to have Americans policing Haiti.

Eh. In two years? Maybe.
You couldn’t pay me $20,000 to fly into Port Au Prince and drive around the city.

Real life experiment with putting a population with the average iq of 75 on a small island. Utter disaster.

I’ve been to Haiti twice on mission trips since 2013 and I know I’m not the only one who has.. I could make this a long post but will sum it up quickly.
The level of corruption there is something foreigners just can’t grasp. I haven’t grasped it. But I do know that most Haitians are good people and deserve better.
It’s human nature to write them off and throw everyone in Haiti in the same bucket, but decades of corruption gets engrained with most of the population being collateral damage not even knowing any better.
Another issue is not accepting our help 60 years ago to help build a highway system (as their neighbor did). That can’t be overstated.
