Right. It's disingenuous at best to pretend this "longstanding policy" exists in a vacuum when we suddenly start letting in massive waves of "migrants" at the southern border under the guise of "political asylum."

Not really. Cubans came across the Cuban minefields a lot. It they could make it the the fence, our Marines would open it it up, pull them thru, and safely guide them thru our minefield. They were then granted asylum and sent to the US.

The controversy came with the Haitians. They were fleeing civil war. We picked up about 15K of them too. Then Castro decided to look the other way if his citizen tried to flee, just to create more problems for the US. Cubans were allowed asylum, but not the Haitians were a different story. I remember that was controversial. I left before it was resolved but I believe a few Central American countries agreed to take the Haitians.

your statement BTW that this was always policy is technically false. look up what Clinton did in GTMO in the 1990's. I was on the news getting off of my MAC flight with babies in diapers at NorfNAS. we were called refugees.
