I've thought about this issue and infusing govt money (your tax dollars) is the easy answer, the lazy answer, but the wrong answer.
My understanding is that at least part of the housing problem is due to so many houses being bought (often by private equity) and not being re-sold. They are rented. This drives up costs for purchases, which in turn makes for higher rents.
Some things we can do:
- Remove all restrictions on hemp. They use hemp to make blocks for homes where they are able to use less concrete, things are cheaper and so forth. This puts competition into the market for building materials.
- They also take old plastic turn it into a slurry and use it to offset the amount of concrete in blocks. Same deal again. This is a wise use of govt money, harvesting the plastic from landfills, for example, as it reduces the load on land space for landfill use, helps the environment, and puts more competition into the building market. These blocks are like lego pieces and fit together well so the need for as much mortar goes away. Things all get cheaper.
- You can also raise taxes on rental income derived from private equity ownership. Individuals that own homes and rent them out see no changes. But, PE firms and that specific income can be taxed, exorbitantly. This will incentivize selling these homes, increase supply, and prices go down. This can be done whether we have income tax or a consumption tax, as PE firms use property management services to take care of the properties, as opposed to many owners that rent out and maintain stuff themselves, and that is a service where a consumption tax can be applied.
- The other things you do are take the brakes off the economy, stop the war on oil and energy. This will make everything come down.
- Additionally, shutting down HUD and wiping your hands clean of all that mess will allow you to send much of that HUD money to the states where it belongs, as well as surrendering all HUD assets to the states they are in, which will allows states to sell properties for cheap, or lease them out cheaply etc. States know better than the federal government where subsidies will work and where they will be detrimental.
- End the income tax which penalizes you for saving money and go to a consumption tax. This will make the frugal living to save for a house much more productive.
- Cut off sanctuaries. Starve them of cash and send their allotment of govt funds to states that are not sanctuaries, or the states that don't have sanctuaries. Flooding these states with money will allow them to target things that will actually help, like putting in roads and utilities so land can be developed and new houses built, etc. Make sanctuaries and those with assaults upon liberty like the 2nd Amendment go broke. That will drive their prices down substantially, it will also cause a massive exodus, which will break them and make them respect the Constitution once again. As states like CA implode, it will wreck BlackRock, StateStreet, Vanguard and others, and they'll have to liquidate things in order to keep earnings coming in, and that means unloading houses and other assets. The states that get the money can figure out how to properly spend it so that it doesn't produce localized inflation, or they can simply hold that money for emergency purposes.
Having the government build houses will result in lower quality, higher prices, and longer lead times, and will probably come with strings attached. Once again, Democrats prove they are retarded.

China. They built 50 Million apartments that nobody wants to buy. They're just rotting. Lesson #3,917 in 'Free markets work better than govt.' But some people never learn.

Eric Holder, Obama's Director of the IRS, subpoenaed to testify before Congress re his Dept. 's targeting of Conservatives & Christian organizations ( he ignored the subpoena & was cited for Contempt of Congress) has been working on a plan withholding Federal funds to contractors who build single family homes only. Pushing project like housing in the middle of subdivisions. This has been planned going back to early days of biden's administration. The DNC is like China, it is always focusing on the big picture long term.

The government always things it can fix things, without acknowledging the problem is of their own creation.

I guess I missed that part of the constitution that said the government would provide housing.

It's right there next to the paragraph that says the government will provide cell phones and cable tv.

And he’ll build them smack dab in the suburbs and place illegals in them.
Gov needs to stay out of private industry. Market will self correct as needed.

Great, more government handouts... Are they so out of touch with reality that they do not understand that $10K to $25K isn't going to do much on a down payment in most parts of the country...
I expect loads of waste, fraud, and abuse with this program...
