I agree with all of that. It has nothing to do with being a commissioner. Like you said, stress all the pertinent qualifications. If someone wants to pat themselves on the back, then at the end and only at the end, maybe state “this person is also active in the LBGT community.” Just leave it at that. Or don’t say anything. It’s not like people aren’t going to find out.
I think when people promote DEI above other qualifications, it leads to people discounting, ignoring, or assuming the person has no qualifications. I think we saw some of that here. And yes, in some cases people don’t have pertinent qualifications.

Possibly the most amazing part of this story, given how this thread has gone, is that this woman is infinitely more qualified for the job than the guy she is replacing (the one who quit after Mamdani was elected citing his Jewishness as an irreconcilable difference). That guy's, appointed by mayor Adams, only qualifications were being a self-described fire buff and having a fascination with fire engines since he chased them up and down the road as a kid.
