TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - The Tuscaloosa City Council voted Tuesday to give Mayor Walt Maddox emergency powers and to declare a state of emergency amid new concerns over the increase in COVID-19 cases in the city.

Tuesday afternoon several hours before the vote, Maddox listed several recommendations he says could help slow the spread of COVID-19 if necessary:

Reduce bar occupancy to 50 percent after 9:00 p.m.
Reduce experience/entertainment venue occupancy to 25 percent (during all times)
End “bar” service at restaurants at 9:00 p.m. (still order from the table)

The clownshow continues. At what point do the people simply revolt? My wife met a competitor at market this week. They are in Tuscaloosa. The owner stated that they wouldn’t be able to stay in business much longer if this bullshite continues.

Is Walt still pissed he lost the Governor Mee Maw?

Seriously, why do they keep trying to contain a virus that needs to just run its course?

We have a mayor who failed at becoming governor trying to stay relevant. As if the virus will obey his executive actions. And the city council is pretty worthless for ceding away their oversight role.

Why the focus on bars? Show me some sound reasoning or science that says alcohol sitting at the bar top is more dangerous than alcohol sitting at a table and I will consider it. Until then, they need to stop.

They're taking power piece by piece. Bars are easy targets since social distancing already has a lot of people avoiding them. They won't be the last target though.

The only logical reason I can think of is that people congregate in bars to socialize and stay several hours.

Problem with closing bars is that people will do alternatives like having house parties because booze is still legal and people want to drink and hang out.

I know small businesses, especially restaurants are struggling to survive. I eat at them every chance I get and I have doubled my tips.

The bar thing is silly. And I never am in one so it doesn’t matter a bit to me if they’re open or not.

People go to bars to have fun or enjoy themselves.

I think that’s a problem for these people.

This is an emergency action???

I'm curious what happens with a disaster in Tuscaloosa.

Greek system is likely fricked for unrelated reasons. Schools have been making policies targeting them and often putting people who despise them over Greek Life.

The fraternity system at my old school is completely fricked as a result. The sorority system survives but it is a high female enrollment school and they have their own dorm instead of houses.

People can pay lip service to it online to avoid the ire of internet mobs, but by the day more and more people just do not care about this virus.

Call it disaster fatigue or self-preservation or maybe just the realization of what’s coming economically as a result of these lockdowns or just

I wouldn't walk in one and hang out for hours. That is second in line behind being on a plane or a cruise.
