Tuck is right again. Hard to believe that with all we now know, some still think the US had to drop the bomb(s) to get Japan to capitulate.

But wasn’t the other option to engage in a prolonged combat operation that would lead to the deaths of many American soldiers, the perpetual bombing of Japanese infrastructure, and horrific pain for many Japanese citizens?

At least, that’s how my American history stories sold it to me when I was young.

The alternative was far far worse. It was a horrible decision that had to be made but it was the correct one. Tucker is out of his mind. Context matters greatly here. The amount of civilians and military deaths would've been in the millions without those bombs.

He's entitled to his comfortable, 80 years after the fact opinion.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not just a bunch of innocent people. Both were legitimate military targets. If he isokay with any bombing done during WW2, then morally he should be fine with the A-Bombs. Pretty ignorant on Tucker's part.

The fire bombings of Tokyo and Dresden were worse than the nukes.

Like Tuck a lot and I think he’s had an awakening about a lot of things he always assumed as truths….but have to disagree with him on this point.

No-one with a conscience relishes what we had to do but doing so ultimately spared many, many more lives on both sides.

Most people have no clue about those bombings.

Some of the B29s came back from Tokyo with soot all over them.

Good. I disagree with him, but I'm fine not having a consensus that nukes solve big problems.

What do we know? I'll tell you what I know. The Japanese saw the terms Germany got when they surrendered to the Allies in May 1945. Shortly before the Potsdam Conference in July, Japan opened a channel with the Soviet Union (who was still a neutral party to the conflict between Japan and the western Allies), asking them what terms they would get if they offered to surrender. The Soviets came back with an honest answer: unconditional surrender. And so the Potsdam Declaration came out on July 26 where the Allies (true to the Soviet Union's word to Japan) told the Japanese that they would only accept unconditional surrender. The Japanese never made a formal reply to the Potsdam Declaration, choosing instead to ignore it with contented silence. Eleven days later, on August 6, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Then came the bombing of Nagasaki on August 9. On August 12, the Japanese offered to surrender on the condition that they keep their emperor and also on the condition that no Allied occupation of Japan would occur. That wasn't good enough so we continued to bomb their cities with conventional weapons. Finally, with the Soviet Union now at war with Japan and encroaching on their territory, the Japanese agreed to surrender to the terms of the Potsdam Declaration on August 14.

It wasn't a "good thing", but it was a very necessary thing. Saving millions of lives and put an end to the war. Who could possibly argue with that?
