It tells me there's a lot of boomers on here that think they're superior to Millennials.

You might want to challenge yourself on that one.

Maybe it's typically not you, but that first post of yours was a world-class whine. You even had something in there about how boomers didn't have to have resumes or college degrees like millennials do. You get credit for creativity, but it's still whining - just like the post you were responding to.

Don’t fall into the managerial trap of overworking your good workers because you know you can’t get it out of the bad workers.

This just leads to the good ones getting burnt out, and the bad ones keep on coasting. It’s not a good business model.

There isn't one. These millennials and GenZ'ers have inborn entitlement imprints that can't be easily reversed.

I run the maintenance department now but I started on shift in production 23 years ago at $6.75 an hour and we worked like slaves and were happy to be making above minimum wage...

Fast forward to today, and these shift workers have got it so much easier because my department has automated literally everything, and these guys start off walking through the door at $16.50/hr and still incessantly bitch about how the pay sucks and the work is too hard.

We run one ten-hour shift 5 days a week that begins at 8am and all but two of the guys shows up between 8:05 and 8:15 daily with no consequences because senior management (in fricking Chicago, go figure) forbids our manager and supervisors from writing them up for anything unless they get violent, or sexually or racially harass someone.

Accountability and personal responsibility are no longer demanded, and here we are.

Watched someone in their mid 20s get fired Friday because he said “that’s not my job” when asked to do something.

The VP he said it in front of said “working here isn’t your job anymore either”

I chuckled

Why do I get the feeling that you're laying the blame for your poor communication ability and training principles at the feet of younger employees?

Come out of your ivory tower and join the villagers sometimes. You'd be surprised what you can learn when you actually work next to the people you "manage."

Also, you probably aren't paying them enough for them to care about "recurring mistakes."

This is your problem. Everyone learns differently, responds differently. Takes getting to know someone on a more substantial and personal level to know how to motivate them and hold accountable these days. May not work if your model is chew them up and spit them out.

We’re overstaffed. There are plenty of young folks out there willing to work where they feel valued, I’m always mining for talent. Always skate where the puck is going. Check out DDI Targeted Selection/behavioral interviewing, was a game changer for me.

Don’t be an old dog. Adapt leadership style; reimagine recruiting based on your ideal candidate, not your business; these youngsters need a lot more than we did and none of them seem to know it.

Need. They’ve grown up coddled in political correctness free of negative reinforcement. Entitled and needy.

Wow. You should probably reread your own whiney post, Mr. Pot.

Ha. My sister is in her mid-twenties and works in marketing. She was just bitching about how the people she manages are so emotionally fragile and half her job is to be their counselor.

The youngest millenial is like 26 or 27. You're likely dealing with zoomers.

Are you sure it’s millennials? I’m a millennial with over 16 years in my profession…

But yea, it does suck to manage young people. It’s like they just go blank between the ears when you speak more than 2-3 sentences. They have no drive.

Hire better millennials.

Over the past several years, the millennials I have hired are some of the best workers we have. I’m in my 50’s and I’ve spent the last 10 years looking forward to seeing the older generation leave. They’ve spent more time bitching about shite and have chosen to stick with less efficient methods of getting the job done .

Now that we have an organization full of GenXers and millennials, we’re flying.

This. The OP’s problems read like the problem is his unwavering management style that doesn’t work anymore.
