I've been in my line of work as a manage for going on 30 years.

There was a time when I told somebody how something should be done, they did it. Maybe I had to remind them once, but there generally wasn't a second reminder.

Now? Good grief. Pointed out three recurring mistakes at a Thursday afternoon staff meeting. Saw those same mistakes Friday.

And thing is, I'm still about 20% understaffed because we just can't find qualified applicants. So, I could fire these people, but then we would be completely hamstrung.

Anybody have a whiz-bang successful approach to managing these millenials?

Well the good news is the average time a young millennial is employed right now is only ~18 months so odds are whoever is causing you problems will be gone soon.

I’d make the roles as simple and replaceable as possible, then setup clear and measurable goals that I discuss with them frequently and when they fall short “ask” them what they think the issue is.

A lot of them just want to be heard regardless of the validity of their concerns and after that can often meet your expectations.

Just quit then. You don't like the society that produced these employees? Tough shite. Its called "training".

we just can't find qualified applicants.

You mean someone that requires no training? Stop being lazy and train your damn workers.

This is why people hate boomers. Boomers entered a corporate world that didn't even require resumes, college degrees, or fancy digital applications and they also were trained within their company.

Millenials can't even apply to some places without a college degree. You want new workers? Stop being spoiled and hire someone you can train, and train them.

Eta: I love the downvotes.

I had no idea this board was so sympathetic to whiners.

Retire

Great advice

Take a fixed income and watch your buying power dwindle to nothing over the next two years

I don't know what type of business you're in, but there is apparently some redundancy involved, if they seem to make the same mistake over and over. If this is the case, I'd bite the bullet, and have my experienced staff to shadow the new hires, and train on-the-spot. You may be able to do this in shifts, so as not to completely lose production during that time. Also, another benefit you may receive would be to interview your veterans regarding their confidential opinion of the trainee's potential. You should also get some idea about management potential regarding your vets from the way they perceive and evaluate the newbie. Hope that helps!

Improve your hiring process. There is nothing unexceptionable or exceptional about twenty somethings compared to any other age.

Think to yourself - "what could this be telling me?"

Do this. Tell'um that if they get it right you'll let'um have an hour off to do either of two things. Play video games, or watch porn. But not both. The lack of a life experience coupled with an indulged life can be a bitch.

That should do the trick. Report back on the success of this proposal

You're welcome.

It tells me there's a lot of boomers on here that think they're superior to Millennials.

I hire old people and fresh college grads. I put the youngster with the old ones as an assistant for two years before I let them manage anything.

What worked ten years ago will put you in bankruptcy today.

Anomalies are welcomed but far and few in between. I also encourage family members to join the company, something I wouldn’t do before but for now that’s working.

It’s a different world for sure. A lot of communities are firing up trade programs in well, community colleges again and that’s been a God send.

I was in line with your point until you started with the boomer mantra. Again. What is it with you people on here and boomers? Somebody didn't get enough belt therapy from a boomer dad growing up it seems to me. That you can blame on those boomers.

BTW, tired of the millennial crap as well. I have some darn good workers who are millenials. And some that aren't. So what.

Retire is the correct answer. My place in South Arkansas is calling louder with each passing day.

Young people don’t want to do anything but sit on their arse and play video games. Pathetic.

Reading this tells everybody how utterly childish you are!!

First of all, I would guess that the majority of the posters here are NOT boomers, so you are either clueless or just being a little prick.

Second of all, YES, any generation at this point is miles ahead of these young fragile millennials that need to be held by the hand and expect to be treated like they are some sort of “special” generation! It’s quite laughable!!

Clearly by your posts you must be one of them!

Fire 1 person. Maybe it will scare the rest of them.

Make sure you pick the most useless person.

But put some thought into who it’s going to be.

Between me and my coworkers, I’m the most best, most well rounded worker there. Because of this, they give me the most responsibilities and the hardest work. Recently I was written up for making a trivial mistake doing the work that my equals are never tasked with. They will now be in line to get a bigger annual raise than me for doing much less work.
