Truth, not victory, should be the purpose of argument
This is a generic statement and doesn't apply in many arguments here. It works for a philosopher with no responsibility, but the purpose of many arguments in the real world is achieve a certain outcome.
Take tariffs, for example. Tariffs raise prices - a truth. Tariffs bring back manufacturing - another truth.
The argument isn't about truth. One side looks only at the short-term while the other takes a long-term approach. That's just perspective.
Yet, people will argue as if their perspective is the only "truth." Then, they will accuse the other side of being untruthful - usually using the slanders you've mention, like cultist or unconservative.
People come to believe that their opinion is actually a truth. And when people know they have the truth, they become self-righteous and closed-minded - easily hidden from oneself by a veneer of principle.
Oddly enough, the people who talk about the truth the most are, a lot of times, the most full of it.

I went down to the Dominican Republic a couple of times to work for a philanthropist that supports a charity. The DR Flag has an open Bible in the middle is the verse “ye shall know the truth and it shall set you free”. They believe it down there and have made a lot of progress in turning their culture around. A reckless YouTube guy goes of the oath and people bear witness that he would be in big trouble a few years back. That is the best hope for our Nation. I really respect and admire the leaders that I met. They are focused.
Honest Philosophy seeks the Truth which indeed elevates towards Love. Vain philosophy - like a vain heart - not so much.

I started a thread earlier with a quote attributed to Socrates about resorting to slander is an acknowledgement of losing an argument.
Liberals never stand for truth, only victory.
