Building a modern mega-steel plant requires an astronomical amount of money ($15 billion). The government's perspective is often that if a foreign company is willing to risk billions of its own capital to build permanent factories on American soil that can never be moved, it is a net win for domestic capacity.

Hopefully, they will actually develop the mining operation and build the mill this time instead of declaring bankruptcy. The Iron Range area needs mining.

And you expect this announcement to have any impact on the 26 elections?

It will help in Iowa in the 2026 elections.

The first phase of the Iowa steel plant is estimated to produce some 7.5 million tons per year, supporting up to 6,000 construction jobs, according to the White House. It is slated to eventually ramp up to 10 million tons annually and support at least 1,750 permanent jobs, the official told CNBC.

This is how you grow an economy.

Don't they still have steel mills that produce steel in Gary, Indiana and Pittsburgh, Pa.? Why Iowa? Which is a few hundred miles from any coal or iron ore producing area.

The mines/claims of Mesabi (at least the ones talked about in regards to this project) are located in the Iron Range area of northern Minnesota.

And honestly, I'm not even sure why the president is announcing this.

I’d be surprised if it actually happens. Trying to win back Iowa in the mid-terms.
