True. Walls will slow down illegal immigration, but it can’t stop airlines, boats and paid off agents from smuggling drugs and cartel members.

I agree, it will help with undocumented immigrants but as far as asylum seekers, drugs etc it would be a gross waste of resources. It is a multifaceted issue that needs multifaceted solutions, and improved barriers are a part of that...but this notion that 'the wall' is going to magically save the day is a fallacy and one that Trump is continuously pushing for political points/votes

About 34 years too late. This should have been done on February 9, 1985.

Where did I suggest they would?

A lot of big banks and powerful people are puckering at the thought of their dirty deals having the full power of the patriot act turned loose on them.

This sounds good and all but how much more overreach are you wanting to give the government to carry out these actions? There is of course the age-old issue of cash to deal with too

When is he going to call the CIA a terrorist organization, or more specifically, a narco-terrorist organization?

Will you support it 1,000% when a new wave of illegals surge the border claiming asylum from terrorism and terrorist organizations in their cities?

No thanks.

Seems like this opens the door to refugee status.

Any gubment action creates unwanted results.

We look at the cartels as merely drug operations. That's the problem to a degree. They're individual fiefdoms that, much like feudal governments, operate as a quasi-governmental entity within their territorial boundaries. With all of their money, these organizations become legitimized in many areas of Mexico through laundering their money into legitimate or semi-legitimate enterprises, which in turn gives them the support of people who otherwise might despise them. I think Trump is doing the right thing here. If the Mexican cartels are to ever be defeated, Mexico has to do it, and sanctions on our Southern neighbor may be the very fear they need to clean up their country.

I believe as long as there is a market in the USA for drugs, hookers, illegals... Cartels will boom regardless of sanctions. We might just make it more dangerous.

I'm extremely skeptical of heavy handed tactics because the past has shown it creates a more lucrative opportunity and more violence. Just basic economics.

And here we go. I posted in one of the many, many wall threads that if we really do have a national security issue at our Southern border, then doesn't it actually make sense to just go ahead and invade Mexico? Take the fight to them just like we are doing in the Middle East?

Labeling the cartels as terrorists seems to be the first step. Probably not legal for Trump to just invade, though, since I really don't think this would be covered by the AUMF.

Yea..but can they? And would tightening the screws with sanctions have an adverse impact in terms of corruption etc.. I don't really see anyway it can happen without a pretty strong interaction by the US

Sounds like just another terrible, interventionist idea...to deal with a black market crime problem.
