I see no advantages to this at all. On what day did any of us ever wake up and say to ourselves, you know what this country really needs? About 600,000 more Chinese students.

Trump or Stephen Miller needs to explain this.
It may be a case that Trump see's 30 billion a year dollars into the US economy. 80% of them go home when they graduate.
But Trump is an idiot to just say this outright with no explanation. Even if it is playing nice so they don't invade Taiwan. Tit for Tat whatever deal...
Someone needs to explain the vetting process because the CCP are slick as snake oil salesmen.

I think it's tied to negotiations with the ChiComs too, especially over the rare earth magnet issue. The statement implicitly states he does NOT have to give ANY Chinese students s student visa WITHOUT saying it!
We dense Americans may not well understand that which isn't stated but the Chinese are long time masters at it.
And he is not saying they can emigrate here...is not a student visa is only valid while one is a student, once they graduate are they not obligated to go back unless they find some other legal way of staying

And they can be revoked at any time if they play any funny business as we’ve seen with other visas/student crackdowns.
I think we can see this as a bargaining tool and as they get further away from some concession, that 600k becomes 500, then 300, etc.
