Says he's turning it over to the airlines. Airlines have wanted this for about 2 decades. Reason, private control of the business will be better at advancing technology than the slow moving government does.

Winning, again.

that's a load off. I was worried he'd overlook this important issue dozens of people were calling for reform on.

Man, honestly this scares the shite out of me. One frick up means hundreds of deaths.

Personally for me if radar has worked this well for so long, why screw it up?

My wifi goes out when a cat farts in it's general direction...one glitch can be really bad.

the airlines have done such a great job with customer service and trip quality that I definitely want them to run air traffic as well.

My old boss' wife was in a class action lawsuit over a federal ATC mandate that only non-whites were allowed to be hired. They basically threw out every white applicant from the hiring process despite having a well-known shortage. One of the guys in her class made an almost perfect score on the exam, had a 4.0, and they never even considered him.

Air travelers could be on the hook to cover 20 to 29 percent higher costs if the U.S. moves to a private air traffic control (ATC) organization funded through “user fees,” according to a new study released today by Delta Air Lines.

“Proponents have claimed that privatization would lead to cost savings for consumers,” the study stated. “But no evidence has yet been produced to show that privatization would reduce costs. In fact, nations that have privatized ATC have seen operational costs increase at a much higher rate than has been seen in the US under the FAA.”

The study, which is a compilation of data from various independent reports, reviewed the ATC fees associated with a privatized model in Canada and the United Kingdom and found that after the first six years of privatization, Canada saw an additional 59 percent increase on ATC-related fees. In the United Kingdom, ATC fees rose 30 percent. The study also included examples of extreme tax increases, and outlined how a privatized, revenue-based system could result in ATC resources being prioritized at larger airports to raise greater revenue, to the detriment of smaller regional airports across the country.

Interesting. Is there a link to what all it entails?

I ask because I presume that each airport's major airline would staff it. Like Delta would staff the one in ATL, for example.

I thought this was created by Reagan to get around the union.

Found a Business Insider article on it: LINK

I'm not a fan of government regulation, but I would assume with the level of safety required that the government would incorporate something into it. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Is this something he can do from the executive or is he just giving a speech to win points for something Congress will ignore?

Sure... Always is the "Gov" can do it cheaper and better than the private sector.

When are you wanting Walmart to be renamed to "govmart"?

I would assume the safety standards would stay in place.

I don't know enough about the industry, but with all of the advancements in technology(look at the car industry) I can see a reason to pull the strings back a bit and give companies/investors a better opportunity to innovate.

federal regulation just complicates that innovation. scares off investors.

This is how the rest of the world does it, and they are way ahead of the US in this sector.

Explain to me how this increases the risk of "one frick up." What does being a government employee do to stop a traffic controller from fricking up versus that controller being a privately paid employee, in your estimation?

I'm quite sure that the FAA will have regulatory control over such.

Much like the government doesn't clean the restaurants you go out to eat at, but they damn sure send people around to make sure that the people who are in charge of doing so, are doing their jobs so you don't end up dead from the botulism, or some such.
