He is saying that Comey leaked the memo at a certain time, not that the NYT wrote an article about it.

Maybe so. However the basic contents of the memo had already been leaked to the press before the tweet. In his testimony today Comey tried to present this picture of "I wasn't going to make a big deal of or disclose Trump's comments/conduct during our meetings but I woke up one night after Trump's tweet and I just couldn't stay silent anymore". That's false and Trump's attorney was basically calling him out on that noting that Comey's version of events was already leaked to the press which prompted the tweet. His attorney started out talking about information being leaked and then specifically said memos and conflated the two when he shouldn't have. If you get your head out of the weeds and you can see the attorney's point is a legitimate one. Comey had no intention of staying silent until Trump's tweet. He was already talking and it was already in the press. That's the attorney's point.

But when you accuse someone of lying under oath on this big of a stage, it's important to get your words and facts right.
