Because most old testament prophecies have not reached their ultimate fulfillment yet though many have been fulfilled in type, esp in regards to the end times, which really most of these utterances apply to if you have the Spirit interpreting it for you. If not, it's hard to see it. I understand your dilemma and do agree that the Bible should be studied in context. However what would you say to the many quoted prophesies in the book of Matthew for instance from the old testament that he says were fulfilled in a way which seemingly had little or nothing to do with the original utterance and it's application to the times it was given in?

To properly handle the prophets and their words, you need the gift of prophecy. One of the reasons the church is so out of wack is because that gift has been persecuted and shamed out of the church
