I think in the heat of all this partisan political rhetoric, it was forgotten that the Democrats don't really have an issue with physical barriers or border walls between the US and Mexico.

They know the reality of this Trump Wall Initiative: there currently exists some 600-700 miles of physical barriers along some 2,000 geological miles of border between the US and Mexico, and the majority of that are more vehicular barriers that prohibit vehicles from crossing, but that people can simply step over and walk into US lands.

Trump's Wall Initiative doesn't really address those barriers: it calls mostly for repairing/upgrading physical barriers that prohibit pedestrian access, while adding some 100 new miles of pedestrian barriers. There will still be several hundreds of linear miles along the border free to cross.

This all started with the DACA/Dreamers deal in late 2017-early 2018. When the Repubs held both the House and Senate, they attempted to bully the Dems into conceding to ending the DACA deal, while agreeing to fund for Trump's wall. They went about it ham-handedly, most likely because Trump was leading them, and because they held both branches of the legislation and thought the Dems had no choice.

The Dems were perfectly happy to agree to giving Trump several times more billions for border funding than he now is asking for, and even Repubs McConnell and Graham were fine with the deals, but it involved concessions for extending DACA and Trump rejected them. The Dems didn't care about the wall, they wanted DACA. Trumped wanted it all - his wall, plus NO DACA, and wanted the Dems to bow at his feet and kiss the ring. That's not how politics work in this country.

Trump pushed the Dems to back down on their DACA requests with the promise of negotiating on DACA after resuming the government, then Trump and the Repubs reversed their course after the resolution was passed. The Dems felt they were dealt with unfairly, and I remember how many posters here started a dozen threads laughing at how the Democrats got screwed.

Now the Democrats do not trust Donald Trump, and most likely will not trust him for as long as he is in office. The notion that both parties working together to find compromise on issues and find ways to get something for both sides has been damaged. Trump's stupid handling of the Democratic legislation will haunt his presidency even if he held the office for 10 terms now, because of this.

The Democrats don't care about Trump's stupid wall. It will not solve any issues that have existed with the border for decades, and is only a drop in the bucket for what really needs to be done there. All it would be, is a monument for Donald Trump, and a trophy for his party to chant and cheer over. But if the Dems sign off on the wall funding - after already being stabbed in the back by Trump and the Repubs over DACA and the DREAMER Act - then they will have zero ground to stand on, when the tie comes to return to the issue and get something hammered out. They know that the Republicans will not work with them in good faith on this, so this is why they have clung onto the border wall issue with a death grip.

And I guess we have forgotten all about this.....

And we say "barrier" because Trump's Administration can't rest on exactly what the damn animal will be - they started with tall concrete walls, but those ended up being proven to be trash. They say, "walls, fencing, slats, etc." because they haven't really landed on anything that will ultimately stand the test of time. They are proposing to repair existing barriers, because those too were poorly designed and falling apart. Many miles of barrier are simply made of sheet material used in the Vietnam days for temporary landing pads for helicopters. It looks like scrap metal, because basically it is.

Walls work to help bottleneck and slow down illegal immigrants, thus allowing border patrols to get to them and catch them once it's been discovered they are attempting to cross over. But ultimately it has to do with the border patrols dealing with it. If they don't get to the sites in time, then eventually many find a way across, and get lost in the masses. Right now whatever barriers exist are installed in areas where the crossings are taking place the most, so the chances of apprehending them are the greatest in those places. But at this stage, it is only addressing certain spots, and that's it.

The reason why the Democrats want to fund "technologies" in reducing illegal immigration, involves not stopping the physical crossing at borders, but catching them after the fact, when they need jobs, places to live, money to eat. That's when the illegals have to step out into the light, and expose themselves, and it's the most consistently, cost-efficient way to catch them and deport them back to where they came from....

I think we all realize that Congress is essentially dysfunctional, I.e., gridlock. The "pen and phone" MO will be the only option when serious 'emergencies' arrive. The Dems - whose political strategy is to import new voters having lost the Rust Belt - and flip formerly Red Swing States such as Texas, Florida, Georgia, etc. All they have to do is maintain current immigration numbers, and their "fundamental change" will be a de facto Democratic victory.

Trump should test the waters re the "pen and phone" MO; He'll need it in our (Authoritarian) future. There is no better issue than the open Border, to get things rolling, as a majority of the Folk want that Border secured. Dems/fake Polls nws.
